Comments on: Is it time to kill the Apple press event?

Apple's press events can pack a real punch, but others may not live up to anticipations. Is it time to ditch keynote presentations in favor of standard product-unveiling press releases?

This time, Don has a fairly good point. But is it just me, or are almost all of Don's posts negative in tone?

"Realizing that, is it time for Apple to finally put an end to its strategy of holding major events to unveil product updates?"

Huh? Macworld conventions are hosted by Macworld, not Apple.

The problem is simple: With the Internet and blogging, people expect way too much out of these events. Back in the 1990s when we still relied on user group meetings at computer stores for information, very little was known days before an Apple event. So, when the first iPod and bondi blue iMac were released, there was massive excitement because people REALLY did not expect these things to be released.

Today, people expect WAY too much ahead of time. Too many rumors are floating about in blogs and message boards. There is simply too much hype built up based on these rumors. It is very much like a supposedly blockbuster Hollywood movie that is really lame, but still hyped nevertheless (i.e. any movie starring Will Smith.)

Blogging and Web 2.0 already destroyed the huge expositions once held in Las Vegas and other big cities. I'd say that MacWorld should also shut down for good. Expos are dead. Truthfully, the only reason Apple even had an event this week is that MacWorld was in town. Apple really didn't have anything to reveal, but was still committed to hold an event probably for traditional reasons. Apple should bail out of MacWorld, and instead hold its own event - on its own schedule, on its own terms and only when they really have something worthy of announcing.
