Comments on: 2009 will be a dull year for gaming
In contrast to 2008, headlined by a slew of great titles and increasing popularity of gaming in general, the year ahead isn't shaping up to offer much industry excitement.

Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.
Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.

That will make my year right there, as well as the possible release of Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic Online
Oh yeah, and don't forget that us PC users get SDK's too. I'm looking forward to SDK's for a few games from 08, like L4D.
Do he even play games at all? I can think of 3 right now that I'll have to wait in line at midnight to get before it's sold out.
Every time I read one of his columns I want to strangle him.
Also, the amount of money 2008 has generated for gaming will only increase the number of games we have to choose from... and even by pessimistic standards, that means there will be more good games (and more bad ones, of course).
Yes, the PC is still used for gaming.
As for anyone mentioning Blizzard, well, we honestly don't know if any of their new titles will actually be released this year. Do we? They are known for delaying just to get the work done right.
You do not need to be able to name 20+ titles to make it an exiting year. Heck, just the 5 titles you did mention can make this year exciting. As far as Peter goes, nothing he has ever worked on has ever excited me.
09' shouldn't be that bad. Look at some release lists, you might find more than you thought...i didn't see anything here about games (and i meant in the article, not in the responses) like Street fighter IV or
Tekken 6. Conduit for the Wii (cant emphasize that enough). F.E.A.R 2. Godfather 2. The next in the "Burnout" series. Mad World For Wii. Fight Night Round 4. Mass Effect 2. Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Fatal Frame for Wii. Prey 2. And with any luck maybe a couple Finals Fantasy games (one for Wii the other for 360 and PS3).
but yeah....09' should be pretty boring lol.
And I know not all these games have top notch story lines but that's what makes games like Bioshock, Zelda etc etc...all the more valuable.
Then we have God of War 3....
But you are right... 2009 has nothing. </sarcasm>
We are only 7 days into the new year, the CES 09 hasn't even started and you are already talking like the year almost over...
PS... u wrote more games that you will like in 09 then u liked in 08...
I'm just about as pissed as most on this comment board. The first 10 or so comments are retarded too, along with the writer of this ridiculous article.
This year in games is about the most exciting the PS3 have ever seen!! Maybe even the PC and 360. Don't know about the Wii and I don't care, its not a gamers console, its an old people and kids toy. But I guess dumb writers in Cnet see the Wii as some type of revolutionary game console because it outsells the competition. Guess what? IT DOESN'T MEAN IT BETTER THAN ANY OF THEM!! Believe me, stupid people think LCD is the best tv's out there too and that PLasmas now a days need to be RECHARGED or still have burn-in; which neither one is true. Plasma still is the best tv and have a LOOOOOONG shelf life. Ok off tangent.
Please get someone to write game articles that knows about games.
CNET I AM ASHAMED I READ YOUR ARTICLES AFTER THIS ONE!!
UPDATE THIS ARTICLE NOW!!
Wait till 2010 for your games Don, while the rest of us are enjoying the great ones from 2009, IDIOT!
The reality is that every single game I want to play is on PS3 or Xbox.
The problem with the Wii is NOT graphical....it's those dame motion controls! It is far, far harder (and much less fun) to try and play a game with a Wii remote than it is with a traditional PS3 controller! You'd think Call of Duty would be awesome with a motion controller....but it's somewhat unplayable. It's cool, but then again it's not. Especially when the Wii doesn't recognize you've made a motion (which happens quite a bit.) It's a great idea, but it often is more distracting than fun. And racing games? Turn the Wii remote is far more "touchy" than just using a traditional controller. It really doesn't read the movements with the percision that I need.
Playing pool on the Wii is fun and I loved Mario Kart, but I want to play Bioshock! I want to play Dead Space! I want to play Far Cry 2!
The Wii is a perfect machine if you want to download old game from 1995 or play a few specific motion-controlled games with the family --- but if you want to play something far more engaging like Far Cry 2 or Bioshock? The Wii is somewhat worthless, isn't it?
And I don't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer! But my goodness there is just NOTHING on the Wii that compares with what's available on the other 2 systems.

Showing 2 of 2 pages (61 Comments)I have heard your podcast, and read your stories. I understand your approach, and understand your lack of care for other opinions. However, in this case, I call bullhockey and would like to say that this article PROVES that your are not a gamer, and therefore CANNOT have such an opinion about the industry. I would mention the list of games already announced, but others have done it for me. I would like to remind you, however, that it is only JANUARY. Dozens of games STILL have not been announced, and many will come out in 2009.
You, Don, obviously have little to no idea what actual games are coming out and I suggest to you to do your research and read Joystiq and other sites.
