Comments on: Applying movie ratings to Web sites is a dumb idea

Should "PG" and "R" be used to warn you about the content on the Web? Don Reisinger thinks not.

And that is a PATENT...does that mean that royalties would need to be paid, on anything like this?

Have these politicians even used the internet? How are they going to rate every site that goes up? Do they have any idea of how many sites there are? What is to stop someone from changing the site to X content after getting a G rating?

Some teachers in my district use nettrecker directory that our district pays for (waste of money) because it "protects the kids" but I did a survey asking the 2nd - 5th graders which search service they would use at home or the public library - the answers were None (not allowed to search at home parents bookmark allowed sites) or Google. They were not going to bother going to nettrecker loging in and remembering the password, when they could just go to google. So I teach them to use google correctly. I use nettrecker sometimes to find sites geared to my 1st - 2nd graders reading levels and that is all it is good for.

What kind of trouble would a 5-year old even get into? He can hardly read... but oversheltering a child is definitely not a good thing.

this article is kinda like video games now. sure they can rate any x box game based on content within the game itself but they cant rate the online content. any game you play clearly says that all online interaction isnt rated.. because it cant be. Ive played Madden (which is a video game rated E for everyone) and I get cursed out left and right when playing online. I see how you could rate a site to maybe filter it away from young ones but i dont think it would always be accurate simply because of Interaction. Just like this site.. this is a wholesome comprehensive site with information everyone should be read.. but me right now .. i could just say so much profanity and spoil it. would the site still be good.. according to ratings?
