- I have to agree with bwvla. Patents should only be valid on a non-renewable basis for a maximum of 5 years. If the idea is good, and the person is capable of capitalizing on it, then he/she/they should be able to make their fortunes within 5 years, if they are competent. And if they are doing well at the end of 5 years, they should continue as industry leaders for several years afterwards due to their headstart.
