VLC was already the world's best media player, but in version 1.0.0 it gets even better.

" VLC was already the world's best media player " news.cnet.com . That is a pretty bold statement but I have found it to be true. I get videos from many sources and many use oddball codecs, VLC plays almost everything. Thanks to all the smart people that keep open source projects alive! Thanks, to Matt Asay who wrote this article! Joseph W. aka WaterRabbit, Cape Cod, MA, USA, Earth

anyone notice how in past versions video quality is really poor in VLc compared to every media player ever created? Did they finally fix this or is video quality still garbage?

I use VLC in Ubuntu and have to say it works rather well, and seems to play any format I can find. It also worked properly on install which was not the case with the xine based movie player I was using previously.

Media Player Classic is out, VLC is in
trust me I have had no problems with it yet, no subtitle problems, the interface is great, and it plays just about every media file out there

How much are you betting? I'll take your money. Yes it does. Tivo files are mpeg2 files. Even windows media player plays those.

I think without an easy to use media library component or Windows Media Center integratation (which I believe they were working on?) it won't become a power house. I think alot of people like what a library presentation provides vs. simple folder navigation.

VLC is great but it will never be significant until it runs on a bunch of smartphones and mobile Internet devices (like the iPod touch).

It's a nice little hack for desktop PCs, but that's all.

World's best media player? 'Scuse me, but KMPlayer has that award tied up big time. Now, it DOES need some codec packs to play some media..... but in opposition to what Ted Miller says, so does VLC on occasion!

I've had lots of stuff that wouldn't play with VLC that would play with KMPlayer easily with K-Lite installed on my machine. Even with K-Lite, VLC wouldn't play quite a few things that KMPlayer would.

I use VLC, 'cause GOM player has some problems with subtitles and whatnot. Until GOM fixes these problems I guess it's VLC for me then.

it's nice that someone mentioned GOM in this thread because from personal experience GOM is the only player that can compete with VLC

cannot play samr audio? Video taken by some cell phones has the audio encoded in samr/amr codec. vlc is unable to play the audio part. The new beta realplayer plays it fine.

3 years back when I first downloaded VLc no one knew about it, absolutely no one. No news about it, no latest releases.

People used to ask me why in the world you use this software while there are other great ones like real player, ACE Mega Codec Pack etc. But as time passed by I introduced this software to my friends and also introduced to some websites and the response was great and from there on VLC has been a great software and as Matt is quoting it has over 78 million users now
