Do we need progress? Would we like to return to cave dwelling? Reality is that true science, simply for the sake of knowledge, will never be to domain of private enterprise. If anything, Nasa needs far more funding.
Let us forget science, and we still need Nasa. Cell phones, cable TV, long distance communications and storm warnings are all a result of Nasa research. Nasa research has moved both science and industry forward, and we could not have done so without Nasa. The only change I would make would be that we need more consistency of funding and less political meddling.
While satellite communications and weather satellites were developed by NASA, neither required manned spaceflights.
As for cell phones and cable TV, those were developed by electrical engineers not affiliated with NASA.
Basic scientific research has provided valuable technology. Manned space flight has only provided entertainment (Whee! Flying in zero gee!) and the knowlege that zero gee causes muscle atrophy and bone loss.
So have NASA concentrate on scientific research and cancel the manned flights, and we'd get more and pay much less.
I like space, it's just when I hear that each year they are using up to ranges of 14million to 500million or even more i just have to gasp. I think that NASA money should be given to people in need. (hospitals, charity, homeless etc.) Or even our own earth we have enough problems hear on our planet so why not use the money here. I am not saying No Nasa I am just saying don't use so much money each year.
Unique Commemorative Postcard to mark the 50th Anniversary of Space Age
To celebrate this milestone in human?s history (10.04.1957 ? 10.04.2007) the unique Commemorative Postcard was developed by Dr. Alexander Bell. The postcard is put in public domain, available online to view and download: http://www.alexanderbell.us/Docs/Sputnik50_Postcard_A3259.doc It?s free for all to use for non-commercial purpose.
In addition to this the slide show of the old Soviet Space exploration Post stamps is available online (warning for viewers: folks, beware of commie propaganda embedded in that old stamps of Soviet era): http://www.alexanderbell.us/Details.aspx?AlbumID=7
Where do you think most of NASA's subcontracts go? To PRIVATE INDUSTRY! Who do you think made the moon lander LEM, a PRIVATE COMPANY!
NASA's budget is a drop in the bucket. Their entire budget is spent in iraq in a single month. Perhaps we need to wait until we get a less insane president and then we can re-assess our priorities. The shuttle was a stupid idea, but its a child of the cold war, where we did a lot of stupid things (B-2 bomber, Crusader artillery system, LGM-118A, Star Wars missile defence, Pershing missile, etc...)
The U.S. government has a stellar history of screwing things up that could be better handled by the private sector -- such as Social Security, Medicare, and so on. The Federal Aviation Administration was formed AFTER the problem of flight was solved in the private sector, and organizations such as AOPA and EAA have to fight continuously to keep this bureaucratic behemoth from forcing the small guy out of the sky. NASA has also become a behemoth, crippled by infighting and politics. Today's NASA isn't the same organization that got Americans to the moon in 1969. After the Challenger disaster, they were supposed to reorganize and clean up their act, but recent evidence indicates the agency is just as fouled up as ever. As a government monopoly, NASA had its chance. It's time to step aside and let private industry take a crack at it.
i rater ask do we need a military ? 550billion savings
i mean you want to save tax money I'm all for it! but starting with nasa ? thats like i like to save money this month so i drink less watter, but still drive around all day long with my fat SUV, and still watch ppv 5 movies a day, and still every evening i order an escort just for fun
so lets start with the obvious, lets get rid of the military and save 550billion / year, and then hey lets privative nasa too, that we up a wapping 565billion .. damn what a difference ; )
Do you actually think our country would be safe without a military? At least we actually have something to show for all the money spent on the military, unlike with NASA. National defense is one of the few things that our government is actually supposed to do, according to the constitution (unlike exploring space). The "obvious" cuts to the federal budget should not be the military but rather all the pork programs and handouts that go to all the intelligentsia types in academia that are sheltered from the private sector (read: "real world") and have the privilege of discussing whether we should have a military or not. I originally thought you were one of them but at least they usually know how to spell...
Unless there is a VERY good reason to continue funding NASA for the purposes of the security of the United States, I say it needs to be drastically scaled back. I know some say we have reaped a lot of technological benefits from the research that NASA has conducted. That may be true, but I don't believe any of those advances were created in space. They were created on earth. So continue some research, but stop shooting money up into the ether. For those who have a dream of going into space, that is wonderful, but don't expect the taxpayers to fund your dream. There is so much that needs to be done here on earth, in the United States with that money. And I don't mean that it simply be funneled or redirected to other "pet" projects. How about applying that money to shore up Social Security?
Almost all the problems at NASA come down to the agency being controlled by political appointments driving the agendas of each new President that comes to office instead of operating as an independent agency like the IRS or US Postal Service. For NASA to succeed, it needs to operate independently of the Executive Branch driven by scientific needs not political expediency.
I used to be interested in space, and I still am. I have been researching and I found the gasping prices that NASA uses. I is between 14 million and 500 billion. THAT IS JUST INSANE. I think that the money that NASA uses should go towards the enviroment, people in need, hospitals, charities, I couold be here all night. i am not saying NO NASA I am just saying cut down the prices.
The most ovious reason why we should not go into space is because of the hazards. People die, or get very sick, or get left in space. Even if people do return to earth, it takes at least 2 months to get in shape. Space takes all your bones calcium cells and sucks them out. It's like one day your a fit 25 year old women/man, then the next day your a brittle boned 85 year old. (but your still only 25)Also we pollute the earth don't you think the money should be going to the yellow grass that can become green but somebody needs to help it (give it money) to grow. Most of the squirrels and other animals are dying because their own enviroment is just to dirty. We Need the Money for Our Own Planet!

Why? So no more insane maniacs like our current criminal-in-chief and those after him can't start their own personal wars anymore.
This madness must STOP!!
BTW, the official story of 9/11 is a total LIE!
