How About Smart Traffic Lights?
by maxwis April 18, 2006 9:19 PM PDT
I can't imagine how much petrol is wasted by having to stop at "dumb" traffic lights that simplistically change color using a repetive timer. How many times do you have to wait for a light to change when there is absolutely no traffic flowing in the other direction? California should get smart by doing simple things first to save energy, like switching to intelligent traffic lights that sense traffic flow, synchronizing traffic lights, etc.

Sensor driven lights are already invented and have been in use for years. Nearly every one of the thousands of lights in the city I live in use them already, if you don't know about them or haven't seen them then it's obvious your local goverment is still in the dark ages.
