Microsoft's rival search engine apparently has so upset Google co-founder Sergey Brin that he has top engineers working on "urgent upgrades," according to the New York Post.

What a load of alarmist garbage! This so called insider, probably nothing more than some day trader trying to edge Google down enough to buy some stock and short it.
I never trust anonymous sources. Typical

While there is that possibility, it seems that CNET is a poor choice to try to make any sort of market influence.

Folks, everyone seems to be all worked up over the technical aspects of Bing vs Google. The results are very close. I like Bing. So what? I also use Google. So what? So what's the real issue here for Google? Why would they be worked up over this?

I think it's more to do with the Ad money. Several studies have already been published that seem to indicate that Ad placement is superior on Bing. More folks are paying attention to the Ads on Bing. This is what I believe is the real issue. Google has power and money because they are, at least for now, seen as the only game in the world of on-line advertising. They can name their price and folks just have to suck it up because there is nowhere else to go with any chance of their Ads being effective.

Well, if these studies are correct, folks may suddenly have somewhere else to go. Certainly, there won't be any overnight migration. But if businesses begin to see a higher rate of return for their advertising dollar on Bing rather than Google, then Google suddenly has a problem.

Let's not forget the lessons of the past twenty years. The best technology rarely wins, the best implementation of an idea usually wins even if the underlying technology is inferior.

If Google really is looking at this, they have two tasks. The first is to determine if there really is a threat to advertising money.

The second is harder. If they have to make a change to their layout to counter Bing's Ad placement you can bet they will agonize over how to do it without making it appear to be a response to Microsoft's actions. It would be perceived as a victory for Microsoft, a small one, but a victory nonetheless. A victory of any sort in this arena would cause even more press more Bing, which would cause more folks to check it out.

Isn't competition wonderful?!

In my job I do a lot of searching, especially cache search. I also have several Google Alerts set up for terms specific to the company for which I work. Although I signed up for an account on bing and set up alerts last week, I have yet to get a single one.

In the time since I set up my bing Alerts I have received about 200 Google Alerts.

I also tried to use bing in a site cache search, which I found to lack the usability of a Google search. Mainly because there are sponsored listings at both ends of the page (top 2 AND bottom 2). In addition, although bing returned results, only one result from 9 pages of listings was cached.

This, of course, doesn't mean that bing won't get better as time goes on, but as of now, Google shouldn't worry because they are still MILES ahead of bing.

I wouldn't say running scared. More like running twitchy. MS has a LOOOOOONG way to go. I tried bing. It was just meh. I see no current reason to start using it over Google. Now down the road.....lets talk.

@ Alex Alexzander... Bing is better because it gives you more "hits"? ROFLMAO. The following phrase is probably the most dead-on description of the MS world that I have ever heard. Alex... this one's for you and your arrogant, uninformed groupies.

"Windows is.... A 32-bit extension to a 16-bit graphical interface, sitting on an 8-bit operating system, originally written for a 4-bit processor by a 2-bit company without ONE BIT of common sense."

Considering advertising is sold on the basis of 'hits' by search providers, that is a very important point indeed. A search engine the reports more hits in the search than the other may attract more advertisers.

It's what Google's been doing for years. Are you ready to condem them as well, Shycelticwitch?
by shycelticwitch June 16, 2009 9:29 AM PDT
You entirely missed the point of the comment. I was stating that Alex thinks Bing is better because HE gets more hits when you type in HIS name. I think any software needs trial time and side by side comparisons for a length of time that is longer than a few days to make any intelligent statements about what is better. One person's arrogance does not a success story make.

I'm trying out Bing and it's different for sure especially since the only search engine I've ever used is google. I don't know if it's better, but change is the spice of life and you gotta try new things.

Search "virtual dns appliance" on Bing gives me an entire page of the same press release from different web sites. It is useless for me.

PC's are for simpleton users and those who can't afford a real machine and have to upgrade it over time to reach their needs.

Macs are for people who open the box and use what meets their needs right away. Simple.

You shouldn't bash people for wasting money on a Mac, when to them it isn't wasting money. They likely have more of it than you do.

Is this a joke?

bad results coupled with a bloated UI. Add in the fact that it is an anonymizer will have enterprise networks blocking it and we have yet another loser from MS.

MS still doesn't get the web. Probably never will.

Before someone spews google fan boy garbage, I should point out that I think Google is the biggest threat to privacy ever.
by Vegaman_Dan June 15, 2009 1:38 PM PDT
Yes, Pentest. It's a joke. And it's one you're not getting.

All you have complained about are things Google has had issues with as well. Are you ready to cast Google to the flames as well?

It sounds like you don't get it either.

Why is it that most of the people that love Bing are also the biggest Windows trolls on CNET? Coincidence, I think not. I smell viral advertisement here!

It could be that every person who disagrees could also be a plant by Google to make anti-Microsoft comments, yes? It seems to be an equally valid conspiracy theory.
by LaTene_Man June 16, 2009 5:00 AM PDT
Puhlease, Google doesn't need any help and Bing hasn't been around that long. Plus, listen to the tone of the pro-Bing messages. They reek of "paid advertisement"!

I have always had GOOGLE as my home page. I installed BING beta & made it my home page, the eye candy
is great, the searching is yet to prove it self, but I have been able to find what I want without any drama. I like it & will keep using BING.

Supposed to be. The Windows trolls hijacked the discussion, as usual.

NEW YORK (AP) - Palm's shares hit a new year high Tuesday after an analyst said its new Pre smart phone is selling better than he had expected, and its operating system is the wireless sector's "most attractive asset."

Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette raised his per-share estimate and price target on the handset maker.

In a note to investors Tuesday, Faucette estimated that between 90,000 and 100,000 units were sold in the Pre's first week on sale, and he believes there is a waiting list 30 names long at each store. The highly anticipated Pre launched on June 6.

Palm is on track to ship more than his prior estimate of 500,000 Pre phones in the three months ending August 31, Faucette said.

One great thing about Bing is using it for shopping... Search the term wii in Bing. Notice at the top there will be a sponsored link for a percent off anything on eBay. Just follow the link.

The only thing, for now, that I like about Bing is the birds-eye view on maps.

Google 'running scared'. Duh.

"Sergey Brin that he has top engineers working on "urgent upgrades" to Google's service" See, this is the problem with monopolies. They don't start hauling ass until a competitor comes along and just sit on their laurels.
