Now I know everyone making comments are amateur economists and CEOs , but for everyone criticizing Microsoft as if they are the Third Reich, they're just a software company and somewhat of consumer electronics company. I am still surprised at some people who have this emotional reaction to Microsoft as if they caused haft the country to get cancer and die. They have people running the company who are trying the best they know how. If you don't like their products, then simply don't buy it or purchase their stock, like any other company. Get a Mac, iPod, PS3 or use Google's aps. These comments about how much they hate them is beyond comprehension to me. It's as if Gate and Ballmer broke into their house, stole their stuff and burned their house to the ground.

But I have to agree with others here that rumors aren't necessary news. It's like the lastest poll is now the leading story at news outlets. Nothing has happened yet. It's just an opinion, and should be in the opinion section, though I guess cnet doesn't really have one.

Really, you could lay off most of the workforce, keep a core of people to actually fix the OS around Ozzie and Dave Cutler and revenue would increase dramatically and, with a rational focus, new products or improved products would begin rolling out. The first pink slips really should go to the Boy Fuhrer from Duncan Hines. We know he was Gates' buddy college but the guy is an embarrassment. Without the Gates connection, he couldn't get a job at JiffyLube.

It?s quite disturbing, the author of this article would give any credence to statements by someone like Henry Blodget, who in 2003 was charged with civil securities fraud by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, paid a $2 million fine and was banned from the securities industry for life.

Highly doubtful that there will be that many layoffs, if any, at a company that still has lots of cash available on hand. The following article does quell those rumors: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28482589/

Where is CNET's story that the layoff rumors were BS? What, does that not make news here? What a joke.
