Comments on: Can the Donkey Kong world record be broken?

At E3, Steve Wiebe, the star of the documentary "King of Kong: Fistful of quarters" attempts, once again, to answer that question. His pursuit was held up by power failures and lost lives.

I've watched "King of Kong" several times... man, if there was ever someone you wanted to see win, it's Steve... Would love to see him dethrone Mitchell.

Yea definitely! I finally got around to watching it a day or 2 ago as well. I don't get how Mitchell's "tape" can hold up as being the record when there were obvious suspicious questions with it.

I agree as well! Steve deserves it greatly! I wish him the best of luck!

The author might want to rethink his opening line. Weibe has not just tried and failed. He succeeded in breaking the record. More than once. The current "record" comes from a recording of Billy Mitchell that did not meet the criteria for score approval. Remember, the "authorities" threw out Weibe's original record tape for not meeting the criteria, but used Mitchell's without such disqualification.

Anyone who watched the documentary knows the course of events. Mitchell, is at best, the disputed record holder. Weibe, at worst, holds the record for highest score in competition. Hardly a failure to perform.

It seems as if Mitchell scored 1050200 in public in 2007. So if that is true, why is the record listed above (the one from the tape) listed as the record? Was Mitchell's public score not official? Is it more Twin Galaxies obfuscation to gain notoriety? Does anyone really care? ;)

Yes, the record is 1050200. Also, Steve didn't "die immediately after" - technically he reached the kill screen where the game is out of memory and kills you no matter what. It's a hard limitation of the game - not something that he screwed up on.

I hope he makes it, too. But if you watch the movie you learn that there is a random element that makes the endgame unpredictable. The game will just end regardless of your # of lives.
