Unable to update to 2.0 after numerous attempts due to Apple site glitches. Finally about to give up for the night I was able to update to 2.0 at no cost to me.. I had to restore and then the update took care of the rest. No money asked. Unit was bought at discount without Jan update at MacMall ( 315.00 ); Like this Reply to this comment

That?s always been the case. However, Apple runs a close second to AT&T in rendering terrible service to those poor saps who are dumb enough to drink Apple Kool Aid. It?s bad enough sending out software that bricks iPhone 1.0, and having an activation server that simply goes AWOL when iPhone uers try to activate their phones, but Apple?s total hubris and the total contempt they have exhibited to their costumers, makes it far worse. Save yourself nightmares. Go get a Samsung Instinct Smartphone or any number of superb Windows Mobile smartphones from Samsung. They smokes the overrated iPhone in any department you care to mention; Like this Reply to this comment

by rozzinator July 13, 2008 11:04 AM PDT: as a long time apple user, it was a bit of a mess, they launched too much in one day. but for the most part it is all working.

my orig iphone is now 2.0, n o problem there
I have cool apps on it some of which are awesome, there was no problem there
my friends got 2 3G, the husband on windows activated in a minute. the wife on 10.3.9 discovered you needed at least 10.4 to activate, so that was a pain but once the OS was updated and iTunes was installed it took 3 minutes to activate, swap SIM, import all her old contact and swap sim back.
My contacts and calender are syncing over the air for the first time ever - that is cool.

On the whole things went well, but it did admittedly feel like a mess - too much at once.; Like this Reply to this comment


by eaglemania July 13, 2008 1:22 PM PDT: I updated iTunes first, and Mac OS X, second, then was able to update and re-activate my vintage iPhone is less than 20 minutes - over my wireless network at home via DSL. Somebody here has a bad connection, poor process, or a gap in synapses.; Like this Reply to this comment

by Tablloyd July 13, 2008 4:21 PM PDT: bad news: i synch my address book after installing 2.0. look at my contacts-names are there, and addresses . . .but all phone numbers wiped out.
go to iphone, tap import sim contacts (whatever that means)
original contacts return
i turn off synching, in fear of losing numbers again

good news-
that iphone applications stuff is great!

not relevant, but same old news:
i live and work in NYC. cannot receive adequate at&t service in my office in rockefeller center. cannot receive it at the ferry terminal on w.39th st. cannot receive it in lots of other places-all available on verizon.; Like this Reply to this comment

by DaveB1980 July 14, 2008 6:03 AM PDT: I had the same problem on Friday when their servers were getting hammered, but I kept clicking "check for update" and finally it came up with the 2.0 download. Of course activation was another thing after getting it installed; took me an hour or two of retrying every time it failed to connect to the iTunes store.; Like this Reply to this comment

Equally important, there are software publishing problems in IWeb in the conversion from mac.com to mobile me which is also backing up on all of the users who have blogs, podcasts, and personal pages. Check out the Apple discussion groups. It looks like many of those problems will not be cleared up for a week if at all. That is equally an under-reported but really big deal. And Apple is exacerbating the problems by failing to be transparent which just heightens concerns that they may not fully grasp how to fix them. They probably go beyond server capacity into the actual software compatibility issues - they broke the code. Let's see if they find it in their hearts to be open and let us in on what is going on.
