Comments on: Problems delay Firefox 3 launch

Web site problems hold up the launch of the Firefox 3 browser, but the inauspicious start to the attempt to set a download record is offset by a furious download pace.

You have to uninstall your RC3 first. (I assume it was already installed)

Firefox defaults to installing in the existing program folder

Check the Help|About Mozilla Firefox to make sure you really got 3.0. The start page pointed to the FF3 RC3 for awhile even for people who loaded FF 3.0.

CNet should post stats as to how many people come to news.com with the new FF

Wow, problems for 60-90 minutes. Big deal.

I pledged before the download, at exactly 6pm GMT I went to the site to find the download was there, then it all froze up and I had to wait an hour to actually get it to download anything!

As for why people are downloading FF3, it is probably the feel of having the new product that not many others have. I have barely ever used FF2 and have always been true to Opera.

I regularly test each with script and page speeds to get the best I can (I have 7 web browser programs) and I have always found that Opera comes first for looks and amiability, Internet Explorer (now with IE 8 Beta1) is excellent for user friendliness. Safari has been fast and reliable, but then again not as user friendly. Firefox 2 has come near the middle with some good features and customizability but not fast enough and certainly not as pretty as Opera.

Overall we shall have to see what it is with FF3, whether its going to be a sell out or a serious competitor.

As for getting at Microsoft, this 5million download aim is going to get to them, but as always... they prevail with the simpler things in life.

Long live Opera! And await the coming of IE8!

Got the download, worked perfectly. Page looked all weird, though. I guess the first-class slashdotting they got is more than ample proof that Firefox is in ungodly heavy demand. IIRC, the pledge count was something like 1.7 million... even if they only manage 50% of that, it will be solid proof that FF is definitely something that's a lot more popular than IE, Opera, or Safari.

As of 3:15 p.m., they're at 1.6 million downloads, so they'll surely pass 1.7 within 24 hours...

I think this event was a PR stunt gone bad. First unannounced time, when in fact www stands for world wide web, which includes everyone. That is what GMT is for, so everyone is on the same time. Second their equipment and servers could not support it. I have always supported Firefox, and still do.. I put the banners for download day on my blog and website to assist in their promotion, but removed them quickly today when the links brought up only a blank page. Mozilla, if I put links on my pages advertising your product and the links don't work, that makes my site(s) look bad. Since the browser is free, I figured placing some buttons on mine was only fair, but not if my readers get nothing. For this reason I can understand every rant and rave on here.

I'll try FF3 next week. I'm not into stupid publicity stunts,... particularly when they don't work right.

2 million downloads and counting? Sounds like it is working to me. A rough start doesn't imply failure and yes it is a publicity stunt.

It's working fine and has been for a couple of hours now. There are already over 1.4m downloads....and counting.

Well I received my copy today. It killed though didn't throw out, several of my extensions. But it sure blows the doors off of any Web browser I've tried. from the time you click a link until its shown on the screen is so fast you can hardly tell when it switches from one to the other. And this is on a slow 512K DSL connection.

2.5m so far on the counter site, and ~3k more popped up on a refresh 30 seconds later.

Downloaded and installed it from Yast in openSuSE. So far it is everything they say it is. All my favorite add-ons work flawlessly as well. Very well done!

As a die-hard Microsoft zombie, I think firefox is 95% there on the track to browser supperiority. The only thing that switched me back to IE recently, was as a developer, I ran into some rendering issues that only Firefox 3 showed.

SADLY!!! This product was rushed! I take it the are following in microsofts footsteps as not to test but release anyway to the guinea pigs out there. FIREFOX 3 DOESNT'T WORK WITH VISTA SERVICE PACK1!!!!!!

1. On launch "TypeError: Components.classes[PmXp_cid] is undefined".
2. Click any input button on any web page and "ReferenceError: PmXp_obj is not defined".
3. Franky I believe any server call results in Javascript Errors / Alerts "ReferenceError: PmXp_obj is not defined".

Imagine having to click OK to every one of these? Frankly I am very dissapointed this product hasn't been tested.. and yes before anyone suggests I have disabled evry addon etc and the default theme is th eonly theme I have so???????

FIREFOX I LOVE U BUT FOR NOW WE HAVE TO PART WAYS.. p.s. safari passes all css 3 compliant tests and opera is cool.

LOL
