Maybe that's what they are doing with all of that dark fiber? They'd need a high speed, low latency, dedicated link to ensure the data traveled quickly enough to be useful.
I have enough trouble keeping filesystems in sync across a 40 mile dedicated pipe. I can't imagine trying to keep petabytes in sync across continents.
Maybe they're using better electrons than we are?

IMHO this would be widely considered completely ignorant, stupid and wrong if it would come from any regular person (or from a Microsoft employee, of course).

One interesting thing about Google is that they grow with same scale as internet grows. It is thier requirement! And they can do things that is internet wide. Search text, images, now 'share anything' is an other example. Google Rocks!

- Maybe investing in more reliable hardware is a waste when you know you will need newer technology multicore machines asap. The life span of the cheaper system is in sync with the need for the updated hardware?
