The gang was called the Swift Boat veterans for "truth."

The "so-called" should refer to "for truth," since that was the term being applied "incorrectly," and that's putting it nicely. Unfortunately for Kerry, he decided to take the high road and not to honor this kind of trash with a rebuttal. That became one of the factors that made him loose the election.

It has since become synonymous with using slime and lies to attack your opponent.
