This is akin to buying an anchor for a bicycle.

The question is: Which is the anchor and which is the bicycle?

CBS is busy branding itself as a stand alone media player. Now that it has been spun off from Viacom, it can focus on tradtional media like: publishing Simon & Schuster, outdoor billboards with CBS Outdoor, television networks like CW, CBS and Showtime, syndication with CBS Television Distribution, radio with CBS Radio, to name a few. Its online media revenues will grow by adding Cnet Networks to its ranks.

if anyone thinks this will be a good deal for the reader... wake up... CBS is going down the tubes.. now it wants to take CNET with it.. they will manipulate .. change...flood it with ads.. get rid of people all for the sake of change...change everything that's great about CNET and the way it currently is.... I guess they never heard of ' if it ain't broke--leave it the heck alone'!!!

it ruined the best oldies radio station around by taking down WCBS-FM 101 in NYC a couple of years ago and putting a new format.. JACK.. in its place...the people in NYC were up in arms about it... it finally conceded and said 'uncle--I give up' and brought WCBS-FM back.. although not in its truly original 50's and 60's oldies format..

they'll hold CNET a while... eat crow.. put their tail between their legs then 'dump' it at a considerable loss... they can't get the Evening News program right.. and that's supposedly their cup of tea.. how in the heck do they think they can run herd on a great Tech savvy company without messing it up big time.... ' wherry wherry scary'

Well there goes my favorite website. I have been surfing CNET daily for at least the past ten years. I have seen alot of changes in that time and most of them were good. If CNET winds up anything like the CBS website I will delete it from my favorites and go elsewhere for my tech news, software, and reviews.

Goodbye Cnet. It was great knowing you. Guess I will be visiting ARS and Slashdot a lot more from now on.

This is awful news!

I'd rather see CNET buy CBS. For a traditional media company to buy a new media outlet is horrific!! None of the major networks get it. The will set Cnet back not bring CBS forward. So why bother???

On the other hand, it could be worse.... Microsoft could be buying Cnet!

As I was reading about CBS' $1.8 billion purchase of CNET on MarketWatch.com, I couldn't help but remember when CBS purchased MarketWatch.

Today, MarketWatch is owned by Dow Jones. And Dow Jones, of course, is owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Meanwhile, you have Norman Pearlstine (previously head a top honcho at Time Inc. and the Wall Street Journal) hired by Bloomberg, another online powerhouse.

The common denominator: Online is where many, if not most, people are getting their news.....Rest of my blog at http://news.ihollywoodforum.com

God no!
CBS can't screw in a light bulb, and has no Journalistic integrity.
How's Katie Couric and Dan Rather doing?

Boooooooooo!

I have been a C|Net fan and supporter since 1995. This merger will be difficult for the whole community.

CNET better be careful. The way CBS has been treating their TV acquisitions like "Jericho" and "Moonlight", I'd give CNET 13 episodes and it'll be gone.

Wow...this is just the news I wanted to hear because I won't be hearing it on CBS because I don't watch CBS. I sure hope this doesn't set CNET back too much. Ever since the Dan Rather debacle CBS has been going no where fast. Two words come to mind... Not Good. It would be interesting for CNET to do a poll. They do listen to their viewers...right?

I wonder if they will move the tech news to another domain or just dump it altogether when they move cbsnews.com to news.com
Better dust off the stale bytes to those resumes Cnet.

If CBS runs CNET like it runs it's news programs, I will no longer be able to believe anything I read at this site.

I have been using CNET.com for many, many years and I will miss the current format. I am pretty sure that CBS doesn't have a clue and CNET will end up like AOL with Time Warner. Thank You CNET, for the many years of downloads and knowledge. You will be missed.

Product placement...Cnet`s home page...on NCIS OR CSI would be cool. How about Brian Cooley gust starring on NCIS ?
