Comments on: Blockbuster considering set-top box for movie downloads

The Hollywood Reporter says the video rental chain is developing a device for streaming content directly to TV sets. How much longer will we rent movies on disc?

Well - U Can't be too early OR TOO LATE?
by dascha1 April 10, 2008 11:36 AM PDT
Um... Few folks spent all of their time in 91 - 95 pursuing the
"dream box device" for the license to own music-on-demand,
firstly, and then movies, etc, etc,.... why now are the SAME folks
getting the BIG PICTURE? :)

The pocket device is much more personal now and memory is
enough to beam-it-up to anything flat, without the boxy-
shape.

For now I'm off to trade-in my 2004 Suburban for a 1948 Ford
pick-up remake that isn't hybrid but gets 32mpg!

Isnt there streaming services already?
by zincmann April 10, 2008 11:45 AM PDT
Xbox Live offers that and you dont have to do anything else but own an Xbox 360. And I think Sony PS3 has that. The ones that will eventually own the entertainment space at home will be the Game console manufactuers. With the addition of more powerful multi use boxes youre going to see more and more capabilities not even seen today. All we need is faster download speeds at a reasonable price, the current bandwith pipe is clogged. And or the people who own a Media Center style PC can also already have the same capabilities.

Wow - What a Great Idea!
by dascha1 April 10, 2008 12:03 PM PDT
Frankly, you've solved it! The problem now though, is how to
SINK it all UP. For example, I want to explain to my parents,
who are well into their 70's, how to plug in the microphone to
the console and speak in a clear voice in order to receive the
content they remember or just puzzling solutions. I mean, this
is the vision and future of serious fun according to big
entertainment designers:

"On gaming: "What I want to get to is that point is where you can
talk to the game, and the game will talk back." Today, you can
kind of do that - "but I'm really rooting for the advancements in
artificial intelligence and voice recognition technology to really
become commonplace in the gaming industry. I thnk that will
really change the paradigm from the shooter type genres to a
more intellectually challenging (pause) shooter-type genre."
(Audience laughs.)"

LOL, TOO LATE! iTunes/Apple TV/Mac Mini Beat Ya To Market
by libertyforall1776 April 10, 2008 12:15 PM PDT
Wow, they're only NOW considering it when they saw iTunes
surpass WalMart for music sales?! Blockbuster will go the way of
the dinosaur -- won't be long now -- replaced by kiosks like
RedBox and iTunes/Apple TV/Mac Mini... and iPhone!

200?
by Renegade Knight April 10, 2008 1:22 PM PDT
So for 200.00 I get something who's sole purpose is to downlaod movies and then delete them for me? If they want this to work they need to give away the box and rent the movies. Or at least include an excellent Blue Ray player or something so it's not just paying for the right to rent.

Agreed, that's why Mac Mini Still better than Apple TV
by libertyforall1776 April 10, 2008 3:00 PM PDT
At least w/Mac Mini, I can browse the web, and do all the other
media player activities I want. Apple TV/Mac Mini should be
merged into 1.

FREE ONLINE MOVIES AVAILABLE!!!! I have seen and compared many good DVD rental sites. Above all of them
I like http://onlinerentdvds.com/ the most. Reason behind is their
detailed orientation about dvd business. Site first explains working
of a dvd rental system through images and then it tells you about benefits
above conventional system. Gradually it will take you to links of all the
provider sites that offer rental service like Netflix, Blockbuster, Intelliflix,
DVD Avenue, CinemaNow...I have seen some links for Games and Music. Probably
site owners are now adding more colors to this site.
