$10's of millions vs. BILLIONS

10 millions? That's not possible
by shingwong2 March 24, 2008 9:48 PM PDT
I'd say a high performance chip like Niagara would cost at least 20 times that for R&D from scratch. With most CPU hitting a memory limitation in today's world, it makes more sense to just buy from, say IBM or AMD, than to build your own.

$1B revenue - t is about innovation and chip multi-threading
by OpenSPARC-lead March 24, 2008 10:15 PM PDT
SPARC - the scalable processor architecture, has been around for the last 20+ years. The latest generation of Niagara (internal code name), UltraSPARC (product name) and OpenSPARC (open source version of the product) are examples of innovation in computer architecture and processor design. Thought leadership in processor design has definitely changed the industry.

$1Billion of revenue comes from Sun/CMT products.
