Think of the fools who are buying blu-ray. Soon there will be a better format, I have no intention of buying hard media again. Soon digital music on the web will be as good as CD quality and DVD movies at SD that are purchased will have an option for a small fee to upgrade to HD. (just like itunes 128bit to 256bit for a few cents more)
Lower quality is fine at current download speeds but as things improve we will be able to get the best quality.

Showing 2 of 2 pages (85 Comments)In your reply to catch23's 'ignorant' question, you are aware, of course, that your proposed 'solution' compresses the hell out of the musical content TWICE just to rid of it DRM -- aren't you?
I find your reply to be infinitely more ignorant of just how much sound quality is lost when the process of mp3 conversion is undertaken even ONCE (muchless TWICE) than I do catch23's assertion that no one who actually pays for a digital music file should have to jump through such hoops to listen to it on multiple sources.
By adhering to your solution, one would be left with close to zero dynamics in the recording, not to mention the complete lack of a high end if the original mp3 was created at a sampling rate of anything less than 320. Last time I checked, iTunes wasn't concerned enough with audio quality to offer such higher-quality files. And even if they did, you'd still have to squash the file again to hear it outside of your beloved iPod, which sort of supports catch23's argument, doesn't it?
Please give greater thought to what you're talking about before you criticize others for not knowing what they're talking about.
