Yes, we need a better term then the totally meaningless and irrelevant web 2.0. It is more inane then the word blog. How about tech startup?

Why should it surprise anyone? Large companies of any industry are generally very conservative. They abhor risk.

Software, is something a person or a group of people can create in their spare time and actually surpass what the slow and cautious corporations are doing.

Not many industries have such a low barrier to entry. Software definitely does.

So to get noticed(and get some VC money or a buyout offer)they have to actually push the boundaries.

As long as anyone with the talent and a computer can write code, this industry will be driven by the bottom-up.

You're 100% right. But I have to wonder whether this will be the preferred MO "going forward" as the MBA's are wont to say. I'm talking software, specifically. On the hardware side, the big guys are still doing a good job advancing the ball. Down at the Almaden labs, for example, IBM is coming up with more high tech toys than it knows what to do with. What's fascinating is how the Internet has reduced the start-up cost for an entrpreneur: all you need is brains and an Internet capital - at least to start.
