Meh.

When computers were new, they _were_ a god box. Hell, by your definition an all-in-one printer would have been a god box. Boomboxes may have been considered a kind of god box in their day. The modern electronic keyboard is most certainly a god box.

New technology takes existing things and combines them. It's nothing new. What we consider a god box will be a basic item used as a building block in the god boxes of tomorrow.

Yes, the iPhone is an example of combining things. However, I'd
like a TiVo, a great receiver, DVD player, etc all in one with one
remote that comes from the factory. Sure, you can get a computer
to do all of this but it is actually complicated
The "God Box" is a phone.

It will connect to a full size keyboard via bluetooth, to a full size monitor or hdtv wirelessly. It will store files internally or on a memory card. It will hook up to a wireless USB hub, and it will fit in your pocket.

All these technologies already exist. Give it a year or two and the "God Box" will fit in your pocket.

..and it certainly fits the description. With a media card installed, it can even double as a small MP3 player in lieu of a iphone.

Console Stereo Systems and Silly Valley
by Len Bullard December 11, 2007 7:03 AM PST
Right. We once called these console stereos (stereo, TV, radio). Starting as separate units, economics and costs made them attractive to sell as combos, then they bifurcate again as technical advantages increased costs and specialty markets reemerged. Eventually, they split again and now that seems permanent but this is really just longer cycle time.

The computer is already functionally a combo box, mobile split it, and now mobile is recombining.

No one I know calls these a 'god box'. More Silly Valley hubris. SV is the only location I know where a technical conference begins with a guy standing on stage shouting with fireworks and big lighting displays behind him. The combination of entertainment and huckster technology is why the term "Silly Valley" actually IS ubiquitous.

hey let's run around insulting everybody! whee

but the term "god box" taken literally would be the ultimate
oxymoron - how could you put God in a box? I don't think you
could make him stay in there.

It's a solar powered toaster...

...with a 16 way neural network of 256 bit custom Playstation processors. It plays BluRay disks, connects to GSM or WiFi networks for VOIP, and can cook dinner while scrubbing the hot tub filter. With the special Ultimate Upgrade package, it can keep your home computer secure, clean out the garage and check your prostate health as well.

What a bunch of hooey- people have been trying to sell the "Ultimate Product" since women first got into business. This is just the latest hype in that line of thinking.

Can't happen

If I can't even walk out of a door to a retail store without my new toy becoming instantly obsoete then the "God Box" can't last more than 5 minutes. Tops.
