The Real Deal on the Industry
by jasonhoffman1977 November 25, 2007 8:51 AM PST
This is one of the best examples of what has gone wrong with the music industry. In short, it's okay to cover songs (with appropriate agreements), but don't cover the song(s) too well or "we'll sue".
Since before the days of Napster, the industry is struggling to find talented performers who can create original, good music. I guess that's why we now have American Idol and all it's spin-offs.
Long story short, don't blame a seperate industry (in this instance, the gaming industry) for your own failures. Sounds like a life lesson to me, but then again, why try to be a better artist/person when you can sue someone and be rich without the effort or talent.

No, cover songs are covered under copyright law. The cover band pays a fee to the original songwriter, but other than that there is no way to legally stop someone from doing a cover.

It sounds like the Romantics are trying to claim that the cover sounds so much like them that it is them.....

Karaoke Liscensing
by jasonhoffman1977 November 25, 2007 9:17 AM PST
There goes karaoke. No more "Song Title as performed by Band Name". It seems like a few washed up musicians are ruining the entire industry by whining about everthing that involves gaining exposure without the monetary gain. Thanks to Metallica (remember the Napster fiasco - which I understood the argument more than this - and the Romantics for single-handedly causing kids to want to be parking lot attendants instead of Rock Stars.

Copyright's purpose
by slogbor November 25, 2007 9:20 AM PST
The purpose of copyright law is to promote creativity.

So what you're trying to argue is that in the last 27 years, the Romantics haven't gotten their money's worth out of the song? They haven't made enough to justify the original creation of the song?

THEY HAD PERMISSION!
by Noah Diehl November 25, 2007 12:11 PM PST
"indeed the game publisher had permission to use a cover version of the song"

So the Romantics are mad because the it was too good of a cover? Again...it was too good of a cover...well next time make a contract that says only one armed retards are allowed to cover your songs. The Romantics are money grubbing scum bags and if this makes it more then a day in court someone should be shot in the face.

They are going the way of Metallica
by Tripeclipse1277 November 25, 2007 6:19 PM PST
But the big diff is that the Romantics don't and didn't have the fan base that Metallica did. How many Metallica ex-fans are there? Cry me a freaking river! If there is anything that insures the suicide of a band, it's petty lawsuits that just proves that the rich get richer.

this is NOT a new game
by Dahammaz November 25, 2007 6:52 PM PST
It's Guitar Hero 3! The GH series has been following the EXACT SAME format for several years now: get a license to cover a game, pay really good cover musicians peanuts to record it, while trying to make it sound as much like the original as possible.

Anyone who entered into a contract at this point in thie franchise should know exactly what they are getting into.

From what I have heard, the ones really getting screwed are the (usually) VERY talented musicians they get to do the covers and then pay an insanely small amount.

Lame game anyway
by dan_chak13209 November 26, 2007 11:15 AM PST
The very idea of someone sitting down and spending 20-30 hours learning how to fake play a guitar, and buying the sequel, and then IT'S sequel staggers the mind.
Does anyone realize how good at guitar playing they would be if they picked up a real one and spent that time on it?
The laziness of the American pop culture is another thing that staggers the mind. Now, I have seen another game advertised that ACTUALLY teaches how to play guitar as you are playing the game.
Didn't sell anywhere near what Guitar Hero did, however.

South Park
by SeizeCTRL November 26, 2007 12:51 PM PST
2 or 3 weeks ago, South Park did a skit on this very same thing. Stan and Kyle were playing Guitar Hero and trying to break 100,000 points. Stan's dad comes in and is going on and on about how he can play the songs on a real guitar... which the boys say is old and gay and went back to watching Stan and Kyle play.

Is that they are easily replaced. Get over yourself, Romantics.
