XBOX is not intended as a Media Server
by WJeansonne September 6, 2007 7:02 AM PDT
XBOX is an extender of a Windows Media Center PC. The Media Center PC can potentially store and distribute vasts amount of photos, videos and music than any XBOX could ever do. The media storage capabilities you refer to are largely intended for downloads from XBOX Live.

Anyway, Microsoft as usual, has no marketed the Media Center system very well. It is truly an awesome DVR and media distribution system that's nearly free. Moreover, the interface is beautifully designed. Nothing on the market beats it, not even Apple's iTV.

Why no extender software?
by skrubol September 6, 2007 9:53 AM PDT
I have an HTPC running Vista Premium. The only way that I can stream from this machine to one of my XP machines such as my laptop or desktops is to upgrade them to XP MCE, Vista Premium or Ultimate. I can't see myself doing this...
I have no use for extender hardware, as my only TV is connected to my HTPC.
I can't be the only one willing to pay for software to stream to an XP box can I?
