DARPA?
by Methuss August 3, 2007 10:38 AM PDT
It also wouldn't be the first time that a company came up with a technology that the government found to be a matter of national security.

I can think of about ten military applications for a safe, non-explosive supercapacitor off the top of my head. Silent power supply for tanks; remote vehicles and robotics; high-energy weapons such as the anti-ballistic laser system currently being tested on a modified 747....

Valuable
by herby67 August 3, 2007 10:50 AM PDT
If true and powerful enough, the technology would be so valuable that military applications would be dim in comparison.
We are talking about a trillion dollar business. In addition, the safety, environmental end even national security implications would be huge.
I have serious doubts the guys can come up with something as advanced as a high speed, high density supercapacitors (with spatial densities approaching LiIon) but if they were, once it becomes available the time of the IC engine is gone for good.

Or just like the Phantom gaming system
by Bigred99 August 3, 2007 12:08 PM PDT
These guys are snowing us. So few people understand what they are describing, and whether it works ultimately will only be seen once they roll the battery out. In the mean time they suck up investment money, moves things around on the inside of the building, and after 3 years go, "oh damn, it didn't work"

At least up front we could see that the Phantom game console was a con job, and had no real chance of becoming a product. These guys have just gone higher up the periodic table to try their smoke and mirrors.

So if you have to pick between
a/ a new technology that is going to change the fundamental way we harness and use electricity world wide or,
b/ a BS company that the executives of are living very very well.

Surprised anyone remembers the Phantom

I wonder how much money was burned up trying to get that system off the ground?

Wait a few months
by theBike45 August 3, 2007 2:41 PM PDT
ZENN CEO last week mentioned EESTor, which they will use in their first highway capable EV. He called the EStor units "game changing" and said they will be in fully production within 12 months.
Old news said that EEStor will ship a test unit to ZENN for testing sometime this year. Eventually, the truth will be known. If the EESTor units live up to their CEO's claims, all other batteries immediately are made obsolete.

Better Battery Tech Already here
by batteryguy August 4, 2007 2:11 PM PDT
Year after year I hear about companies raising 100's of millions on a better battery and all turn up as smoke and hype. A technology exists that enhances the current lithium ion technology by handling the peak pulses leaving the battery to do just what it was made to do provide energy not high pulse power. When this small 15 x 15 x 1mm non carbon based ultra pulse capacitor is used with a lithium cell in digital pulse applications the cycle life can be extended by years, run time per charge in G3 applications is increased by 40-60% per charge. The cost is only a couple of dollars and the product is currently in production. Just think your Smartphone battery lasting 50% longer and after 2 years still be at the same capacity it was when you first bought the device. No thermal runaway. The cell phone people dont like this fact because they can sell $30.00 replacement batteries(that they pay $3.00 for)to you every 8 months.
I have all the data to support this as well as products that have been using the technology for the past 2 years. When presented to cell phone companies and yes even to APPLE they never would even give the chip a test. Oh yes and also it is 100% recycleable. Any one interested in more info
just ask. I guess its just not sexy but damn it sure does work. Watch for this technology at you local hardware store soon. It works wonders on Li-Ion power tools. Doubles the run time without the heat.

Sinister?
by drivin98 August 4, 2007 2:25 PM PDT
After reading the Toronto Star article and Richard Weir's reaction to having his company even mentioned in a newspaper I'm beginning to wonder if he's not been threatened. He sounds more scared than just trying to bs. Seriously, the guy has spent many years working on this and has very savvy backers.
Maybe I am just paranoid but this technology threatens trillions of dollars in other people's profits world-wide. Just something to think about.

Checking it out at Fairfax Motors & Zenn
by UriahHeepy September 17, 2007 2:11 PM PDT
One of the licensed users of the eestor battery, Zenn Cars, has a distributorship in Fairfax, VA. I called the good dealership and emailed. The email was answered without a message (a Mr. King was the sender); the phone call's response to the new battery was a flat footed, "Uhhhhhhhhhh." Not to be discouraged, I contacted Zenn car by email and voice mail..No response.

This -- meaning news about production and no responses to inquiries -- is getting weirder by the day, but I hope my imprressions to date are wrong.
