I think it has to do more with the innards

I think this is more related to the internal busses that connect the
chips... processor, memory, i/o...
Think as a 40Gb bus conecting the processor and memory.
(We should consider that this are "bits" not bytes)

As for the "Mach-Zehnder interferometer" part...

I think that the transmision of information is done "modulating
the phase of the light" not its intensity (on/off).
So, the interferometer creates/detect phase changes.

Think it as the diference between AM (amplitude modulated) radio
and FM (frequency modulated) radio: two ways of sending
information thru the airwaves.
