Mac users can put OpenOffice on their systems now, but it requires a few extra steps that an ongoing porting project would sidestep. And now, Sun's on board.

How is this different than NeoOffice?

Just buy-out/fund/support the guys at NeoOffice.

NeoOffice has made a heroic effort to port OpenOffice.org to the Mac. Their product is very useable and generally stable.

They deserve the funding more than any new project Sun may think of.

The NeoOffice Folk's Deserve Inclusion

It's good to hear that Sun will be working with OS X interface,
rather than going through X-11 ... And, in the spirit of Open
Source, Sun should at a minimum provide serious inclusion of the
folk's porting NeoOffice ... Jeez, guy's, at least give the core group
some new top of the line boxes for their efforts ...
