This shouldn't be a major issue

ATM machines have been around since the 1970s
yet we don't hear about how vulnerable they are
to software attacks. Why should voting machines
be much different than ATMs? Wouldn't a voting
machine in essence just be a modified ATM
anyway?

The operators of ATM machines. i.e. banks, don't have a
potential interest in manipulating the data.
Another difference

Each month, you get a statement from the bank that you can compare with your own records, including the ATM receipt. In contrast, voting is anonymous and receipts are illegal in most if not all states.
