I am not saying this to defend Steve, but if I were under a serious
investigation that could possibly result in dire consequences I
think I would be inclined to say whatever I thought might help
shift the focus elsewhere. So until we have others come forward to
collaborate this I think a grain of salt might be in order.

A lot of companies were guilty of this. People don't get away with it now, but it was pretty standard practice back then.

It's good that Apple is going through with this as thoroughly as possible to be open and forthright aobut it.
