...was .xxx voted down?

Probably because there are some rational minds prevailing at ICANN.

It would not help inadvertant viewing of porn unless it was also made illegal to use any other TLD for porn. Most pron-holers would just get the corresponding and more .xxx domain names and forward them to their existing domain name. What the .xxx domain would do however is make a large list of internet porn-holers. It would also make it more likely that at some time in the future an attempt would be made to shut-off porn. It would also make a nice target for the right-wing, god spouting, hypocritcal, lying, religious zealots to use for propaganda.

I say way to go for ICANN to putting a road-block up in front of dubya and his bible toting idiot cronies.

Of course they buckled under the political pressure. Maybe it is time to revisit the UN proposal to "internationalize" the ICANN function and take control away from the US. This ICANN decision just flies in the face of pragmatism and economic realism, and in fact logic.
Sex-related word/phrase searches comprise up to 60% of all searches, and have for over five years, maybe more, ever since Keyword Tracker and others have kept statistics on this subject.
.XXX as a domain destination would easily focus the many searchers on the result they wanted, reduce unwanted results in other areas of search, and offer a revenue source.
When will the "legislators of my morality" realize that they don't get to control the way I think, or the free enterprise system.
It serves the US right if we lose control over this most valuable of world resources, ICANN.
While I'm not big into porno, I certainly don't think I have the right to tell my neighbors or friends around the world that they can't watch it whenever, and where ever they choose.
Making the search for such materials easier just makes sense, economic and otherwise.
