designed, is a problem for people who take pride in thier
possesions. When I first opened the package I was dazzled by its
beauty, form and function. Now, alas, it has become damaged
goods. They should have used something more like glass that
the fingerprints could be polished off of. Because the first time
you clean the nano with any thing other than a microfiber cloth
used for plastic lenses you are in for a shock. But in reality, I
think that the only thing that would satisfy a nano owner would
be a full refund of thier money. So they could go out and buy a

the folks at ars technica tried really hard to scratch their nano and it survived amazingly well; they've got the pictures to prove it, so i'll take their word for it.

BTW, I also have "scratch proof" glasses......that are, well......scratched. "WHERE'S MY LAWER!" I think you guys are onto something here.
My two cents.

Also, the nano seems pretty durable. I don't have one, but i can tell from the pictures on this site:
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nano.ars/3
These people totally abused and battered the nano, but it took more than a 40-foot drop, being run over by a car, and being dropped at 50 mph to die.

Walk into ANY Apple Retail Store and take a look at the iPod
Nano's that have been on display for - what - a couple of
months now - and you'll see (having been touched by
THOUSANDS of people, and abused God knows HOW) that they
have comparitively FEW scratches!
When I've been in there the people that actually WORK there will
bang them on the counter and take coins to FACE just to show
how durable they are! And don't give any conspiracy-theorist
bullcrap about how the display Nano's are any different - they
aren't!
Conclusion: good products - bad consumers - WAY too much
media hype.

So I had to use my nano for quite a while without any protection for it and because of that it DOES have a lot of scratches on it even though I'd always been careful with it, even putting it in a seperate pocket in my handbag so it was away from things that could scratch it (eg keys)
I do have a case for it now, and I hate taking the case off it because my nano looks terrible. There's small scratches and even a little crack on the edge of it and I have no idea where they came from because I've always been very careful with it.
Want photos? I will try and get some soon and post the link here.

Except....!!!
I have as yet, in the past two days I have owned the device, taken it away from my desk beside my computer. As protection, since I don't yet have a case for it, I have been housing it in the little leather pouch that Apple supplies with the iPod. I have taken it out of it's case and replaces it maybe a dozzen times in these last two days and there is defenetly heavy scratching on the screen and the face of the iPod just from placing it in and removing it from this case. All the scratches go in one direction, up and down.
I payed almost $400.00 for this (over $400.00 with tax) and to have it scratch so easy, to have the supplied cover cause this much dammage, is just plain wrong in my mind.
I have not contacted Apple yet to see what their official stand is on this, that is my next move. But, If I get the run arround, if they do not consider my problem a problem, then I will take the iPod back, get my money back and purchase another product from another company.
In my opinion, if you are not happy with an item, take it back, buy something else from another company, returns and unsatisfied customers speak louder to a company than any lawsuit can.
...Just my opinion...

Showing 3 of 3 pages (101 Comments)Someone who has an iPod, no sleeve or case for it, and wraps their earbuds around it with them still plugged in; then stuffs the whole thing into their pocket. When they take it out, they don't gently slide it out, but decide to yank it out roughly, and usually end up breaking their earbuds after a bit. After they take their iPod out, they roughly pull off the earbud wires and attempt to control their iPod with one hand while standing up, and then drop it.
That is what results in excessive scratching. Obviously it's exaggerated, but I've actually seen people do that before.
b. Careful user
Someone who has cared enough to buy a case for their iPod or at least a screen protector. (In all honesty, the scratches on the chrome backplate is only a facial problem.) Wipes off their iPod every now and then with a gentle cloth. Their iPod is the envy of their friends because of its near- or literally perfect condition. They know enough to at least stash their iPod into their bag in a safe place when they're not using it, and to not leave their headphones plugged in and wrap them around their iPod. Most importantly, they care.
That, my friends, is exactly what most of the people who are suing Apple are not doing. In fact, not only are they abusers, they're greedy abusers, too. If I buy a bag and then cut it up into little pieces, can I expect a refund? If I buy an umbrella and stamp all over it when it's open, can I expect it to work properly? No, of course not. People need to learn to take care of their belongings instead of blaming it on other people.
Of course, there's careful users out there who were just unlucky enough to wind up with a defective product, in which case they have the right to and should demand a refund and get one. It's just that some people out there are greedy enough to abuse their belongings and then blame it on manufacturers, and they're almost certainly part of the group of malfunctioning-iPod owners.
