"Users haven't been clamouring for Mac support."

Yeah right. I'm sure on their error page they have a "Request Mac
support" button. The problem is they don't make it easy to ask for
support. Not only that, when people apply for a job, they typically
don't want to start off by making demands.

I don't see why they just don't adopt the policy of using published
web standards - then they don't have to exclude anyone.

By users, they mean their clients, the large corporations.

And why would they? American Express isn't going to concern itself with what browser someone uses (or can't use). If they cared about specifics, they wouldn't have turned their resume' processing over to Brass Ring in the first place.

This is just a Brass Ring failure and "they're not clammoring for it" is a moronic comment.

The problem is the bozos who build these sites think they ARE
following published web standards. The mindset is "If it works with

Well, what happens when the equally non international standards compliant IE7 arrives with it's additional security idiosyncracies. What then an immeadiate urgent complete web site revision and update!

Macs - what are they? Thought they were burgers?

People will use it and therefore it will be supported.

Hardly anyone uses Macs - hence hardly anyone supports them.

Web Standards
by webdev511 October 27, 2005 1:32 PM PDT
In the '80 the saying was "No one ever got fired for buying IBM"

Now web developers should take off the blinders and heed the saying "No one ever got fired for using web standards." In my developement, I've found that if it works when accessed using Opera or Firefox on Linux, it works everywhere.

I have two questions for the people that create these sites.
First "Is the time you save developing for one browser on one platform worth turning away qualified candidates?"

Second "Do you tell your the people that are paying to use your application and services that you've prescreened out all non windows/IE users?"

I bet you don't.

Not true. There are things that "standards compliant browsers" render that IE will not. If you use web standards, and test in Opera and Firefox on Linux, and then you find that you are excluding 90% of the web surfers in the world because you don't support IE, you just may find yourself fired. On the flip side, if you support IE and leave out 10% of the worlds surfers, you haven't created quite the same problem. Still, its best to find the lowest common denominator between all browsers, and certainly, nobody can argue that IE should be ignored... not with its overwhelming market penetration. Just because a voluntary organization declares something a "web standard" does not mean that it is ubiquitous, or that it works in the MAJORITY of installed web browsers.

Web Standards Issue... not Mac

This is not a Mac issue, it's a web standards issue. Don't support
companies that program websites or online applications to work
only with propriatotry language tags.

As a supporter of a FREE and OPEN capitalistic economy, I'll give my support to any company that can provide me with valuable products or services. I would never reject a vendor that provides the most value available simply because they did not adhere to trendy geek ideals.

that buy software and services from a company like Brassring. I
don't think that all Apple users are smart, or smarter than PC users,
but there are some smart people using Macs and if Amex don't
want these people then it is their own fault. Talent will go

If Amex can find a solution that works well in their computing environment, within their budget, then they will be a step ahead of the competition that spends more money on software and support. There is nothing stupid about choosing a solution that fits your business needs. If Amex doesn't want to deal with Apple computers, then they will probably have less support costs and a smaller range of technical expertise required for operations.

Trouble Makers

Perhaps the companies using these IE only sites are doing so for a purpose. Perhaps they want employees who will conform meekly to the company line. Perhaps they think that hiring those non-conformist Mac people would be nothing but trouble?

You are more of a conformist than you thin
by Rolndubbs October 28, 2005 10:44 AM PDT
We are all conformist, in one way or another. Your preaching the love of apple is proof, since, judging by these message boards, it has seemingly become popular to be scream the greatness of apple and the evil that is MS. Supporting microsoft is conforming, since they are the big dog. I get sick of all the buzzwords people love to throw out because they wrongly believe that it makes them sound more intelligent. Unless you are the first person to do something, you are in some way or another conforming to what someone has done prior. Either side is filled with conformists, so don't deal that BS of being a non conformist simply because you don't use windows as an operation system.
Way off the point

Even as a MAC user most of the time, I use windows for a lot of work limited by the programs I need to run. That is why I would not be sitting arround doing the POOR ME being discriminated against again BS! If the job is want you want get down to the Library or a friends house and fill out the application! The issue should not be what broswer or OS you are using but do you really want the job or is this an easy excuse for not trying! Enough Said

Mac and Business

Sounds like Steve Jobs has a demand for some new software to develop for his MAC clan. He already is drowning Microsoft with his 64 bit OS. Maybe he will tweak MAC software to include an user friendly "Virtual PC Machine" software installed.
What a concept!!!!!

This is America!!!

How dare these big companies not bow down to the 4.3% minority. This is America for goodness sakes. It is what we do. Majority rule? Not in this country buddy boy. The vocal minority has to get their way or they will just whine and snivel until they irritate everyone else to death.

If you know your American history...
by JuggerNaut October 27, 2005 6:47 PM PDT
...you would know that a small minority of people is what
pushed for America's Independence from the British Empire.
Most (meaning the majority of) American settlers (colonists)
were against the idea of an American Revolution and were loyal
(called Tories) to King George and the British Empire. Of course
the rest as they say is... history!

So the next time you think about the minorities (and before rant
on them), just think of your own American freedom and those
Forefathers (again, a small minority) who made it all possible!
Of course we have to thank France for their hand in the effort ;-)

It requires no extra work or money to support mac users, and linux users, and non-IE windows users, and the poor saps still using IE, all at the same time and with the exact same code. That is part of the foundation of the internet and web.

I am writing this in firefox, on linux, It works just fine and CNET had to do nothing extra to make this happen. Actually this works better in linux since the spyware in the ads on this site has no effect on linux and I am running no anti-spyware software, but that is beside the point.

The only reason these companies are in this position is becasue of extreme shortsightedness. Now it will cost them more money to fix the problems they caused. It could have been avoided and they would have saved a ton of money, time and not pissed off a significant market. There are far more non-MS users then you can imagine.

Your remarks have no merit whatsoever.
