Comments on: Leopard nipping at Vista's heels

The new Mac OS is due in spring, which would put it after Vista. But if the Windows update slips again, that could let Apple get in first.

yea, Time Machine takes that to the next level

instead of going back to previous versions of your system and losing all changes you made since then, you can do this on an individual file case-by-case basis. i think all the comparisons are void..

Different Tools for Different Purposes...
by rlaw68 August 9, 2006 8:48 AM PDT
Apple wants to go head to head with Microsoft for business apps and productivity; Microsoft wants to go head to head with Apple for graphics, music, and design. And the partisans on both sides are just as zealous as anything you see in politics.

But why?

It seems to me that you're arguing over whether a hammer or a screwdriver is the better tool without considering that perhaps both have their uses.

I run Windows and Office and will so long as they're the default standard for business because they work very, very well with every other business user and client in the world. Yes, you can complain about security and updates, but these are news only because of the *huge* target that Microsoft has had on its back for about a decade and a half. And for what it's worth, they spend a ton of time and money to constantly improve their products and address issues.

I use an iPod because it works for music and video; my designers use Macs exclusively because they're best for design and graphics. Neither is perfect either -- the iPod and iTunes work, but I would not say that either is bug free or totally secure.

In any case, the whole point is that when I need to hang a picture, I get a hammer. When I need to remove the faceplate on an electrical outlet, I get a screwdriver. And I don't think that using the right tool for the job necessarily is a commentary on the other, nor that people who, at the same time I'm using a screwdriver are themselves using a hammer for a different job are somehow stupid or clueless.

Just a thought...anyway, back to the fray.

You are comparing a tool that turns things with a tool that hits things in your analogy. Macs and PCs both compute things.

And you don't need Windows to run Office and have compatibility "with every other business user and client in the world." Office for Mac will give you that, as for the most part will OpenOffice.

The Mac may not be perfect, but it can do anything a PC can do. And technically a PC can do anything a Mac can do, although if you want to run OS X you're gonna have to figure out how to make it run at all let alone well. Not so much a hardware limitation as a firmware one, but still...

"Nipping" vs. "Reacting"
by davau August 9, 2006 12:10 PM PDT
I thought I eluded to that as well. It would be equally fair to
compare Vista release date to MacOS 10.4 Tiger release date.
Vista = sometyime in 2007 or 2008
Tiger - April 2005

Leopard is probably irrelevant to Vista's heels
by Jackson Cracker August 9, 2006 9:37 PM PDT
So what if Leopard does end up being released before Vista?
Apple has made it clear that they don't want you running it
on your Dell, HP, Gateway, Lenovo, Acer, Systemax, eMachines
etc PCs. So where is the supposed window of opportunity?

Its quite sad that Apple will include a program in Leopard that allows you to install Windows. If they find windows so behind the times and Microsoft so uninnovative why would they include this as an ability if Apple believ's their products to be so great? Why would an apple MacOS user need Windows? I find it redundant that Apple bashes Microsft and Windows when they allow users to install Windows on thier systems, yet they refuse to allow users to install MACOS on any system besides their own (CAN YOU SAY MONOPOLY!?!)
Jobs Comments about Microsoft

I think that Jobs should keep quite about the Microsoft comments. Bill Gates might get spiteful and stop manufacturing Microsoft Office for Mac which could hurt Apple sales.

Another Pro-MS headline from c|net..
by imacpwr August 12, 2006 12:16 PM PDT
"Leopard nipping at Vista's heels", as always, c|net writes a
headline which at first glance looks like it says Vista's in the lead
with Leopard trying to play catch-up. How far is THAT headline
from the truth, it's Vista that's still trying to catch up with TIGER..!!!

Mac OSs have a history of SR
by Thomas, David August 15, 2006 10:15 AM PDT
Speech recognition has been part of nearly all Mac OSs for twenty years. I can't believe you just asked that.

It only illustrates just how little people know when trying to compare the two OSs

Ummmm...
It's still not working even in this video Podcast...err...Blogcast (MS).
Keeps repeating verbal commands until Vista Voice can understand what to do...lags behind & hangs.

How will this ever work in a busy office with all the backround noise?

That's why YouTube video shows how Vista Voice can bomb big time with "ambiant noise"...
Leopard, start runnig now.... thast the only thing you are good at

i strongly disagree about what Jobs said about Vista & what exactly microsoft does is copying apple and Goodle.
If apple is that good everyone would have eaten one, there are less than 10% computer users who use Mac OS X,
1. You can not compare Microsoft & Apple, microsoft is way way ahead of apple.
2. The whole era of computer is started by microsoft, if Apple were good, they would not have moved out of india.
3. on what basis apple is saying that Vista 's all features are public & Leopard's are not.
If there are any good features of leopard why are they holding back?

It is terribly important that your comments be submitted with the reader in mind. Spelling, punctuation, and grammer are crucial. Mispellings like "ruunig", "goodle", "thast"... only undermine your arguement, which is pro-Windows, and pro-Microsoft. Good for you - make your opinion known, but for heaven's sake take some care when writing. It's a reflection on your arguement. Coincidentally it is also a parable of Microsoft. Historically, the lack of both originality and attention to detail, along with the numerous flaws in security make MS a second rate OS. It is not elegant, it is a copy of an idea that started with Apple. As a user of both Mac and XP, I offer this opinion as a user - not an expert. But the users are the core constituents of the OS, no matter their level of expertise. I am also a user of the Vista beta, and the first thing I noticed is its close similarity to Mac. I suppose there is a point in OS development where two ideas can converge, but I dont sense that is what's happening here. I sense an attempt to catch up.
Lastly, I wouldnt harbor as much resentment against XP if it was'nt for the hours in my time wasted on crashes, hang-ups, security updates, etc, that I have had to endure the last three years. And then, to top it off, MS wants me to subscribe to a "Live Care" service to catch and recover from its numerous flaws, for a fee. That is a perfect example of adding insult to injury.
Runnig for yours diktsionary, thast right?

Microsoft has problems, but Apple has real solutions

Windows Vista may be a new operating system but Leopard is
too another installment of Mac OS X. But the main difference
between the two is that Windows Vista will require you to
activate or register their operating system within 30 days or you
cannot use the OS anymore. However, Mac OS X is one of the
only operating systems around that does not require activation
or registration of the OS but rather registration of the computer,
only. Mac OS X Leopard will be great for Intel Mac users because
then, you will, be able to use Windows XP on your Intel Mac,
which will replace Mac OS 9 Classic Environment, or better yet,
Windows Vista might be the Classic Environment for Mac OS X
v10.5 Leopard. So Intel Mac users with Leopard will be able to
run Vista when available. Mac OS X has been proven to be a
stable operating system, compared to Windows which requires
antivirus software, drivers, security and software updates, and
more protection than needed. That's why I trust the most
advanced operating system, Mac OS X Tiger (v10.4.8).

Mac OS ...can't wait for Leopard!
by vex April 3, 2007 1:25 PM PDT
I?m a user of Mac OS and Windows. Honestly, Windows isn?t a horrible OS, however it just isn?t as ?smooth? as OS X is. I?ve been a Windows user since 3.11, and very anti Mac for a very long time. When OS X was introduced I gave the Mac another try, and to my surprised loved it. It brought everything together for me, which is something Windows just can?t seem to do. I?ve heard of just as many horror stories involving Macs as I have Windows, however I?ve had nothing but a good experience with Mac OS. It just works.
