instead of "giving"/ selling to the government a cheap toy for the kids to play with, why doesnt the FOSS people devise a scheme to enable programmers to get PAID for their code, and innovation.
this would allow people from the third world to WORK their OWN way out of povity, by learning new skills and becoming expert programmers.
the quiality of the code would vastly increase, and it would allow ANYONE, in the world to get out of the povity trap. its clear everyone is willing to pay for software that is high quality and usefull, its also clean Linux/FOSS does not meet the grade in terms of commercial quality.
so make it so, improve the quality of software, AND the quality of life FOR ANYONE who chooses to learn and use there knowledge to earn MONEY.
there is no better way to get someone out of povity than to enable them to get themselves OUT of povity.
Not by giving them "handouts". it might be a good way for FOSS to recruit third world child labour for FOSS development, but is that something FOSS wants to do ??
if you want to help people, poor people from ANY country, PAY them to code for you,
pay them, they will become experts, they will produce code that people will be willig to PAY for,
everyone wins,, we get better code, and we help world povity.
but dont try to promote government sanctioned, child labour in third world countries for FOSS, its not a good look.. !!!
Great idea $100 laptop for everyones children but ours
The $100 dollar laptop for the third world only is a hard kick to the stomach for the majority of families here in the U.S.A. I for one have had it... my children could each use a notebook at this price.... Our schools would save money by going over to ebooks.... ?savings to the tax payers money.? Ebooks could be updated faster and at lower costs than replacing printed books every stinking year... not counting the time for correcting poorly written or just plain wrong information in th book. This is a wonderful project for low cost laptops to all students of the world. It could have been launched and become a work in progress if the originators were more open minded to EVERYONE receiving this benefit for there children too... and not focused just on the poor and down trodden of the third world nations constantly being identified .... fore once please give us all a break..... We are a generous and giving nation to the poor of the world. For once remember the rest of us who really pay the majority of the costs for helping others around the world. Orders from a few state school districts here would have generated the initial order size necessary to meet the requirements to start production. Just goes to show how a few of the elite think they always know better than all the rest of us as usual. I for one have no problem with a $100 dollar computer for our students... or anyone else around the world who wanted one. To keep this laptop free of MS windows operating system as the original plan stated is a winner for everyone except MS. Thanks for your time.
THE LAPTOPS WERE AVAILABLE TO US. I COULD BUY ONE FOR $200.00 AND DONATE ONE AT THE SAME PRICE TO A CHARITY. THIS ENDED IN DEC. OF 2007, I THINK. I DID NOT DO IT AS I AND ALL MY FAMILY ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE COMPUTERS. NOT LAPTOPS, BUT COMPUTERS. I READ WHERE ANOTHER PERSON DOES HAVE THE $100.00 COMPUTERS DEVELOPED. IF YOU NEED ONE, I'M SURE YOU CAN GET ONE.

Why not make this for all children worldwide? Should it matter if the country is a poor one, or not? Either way the laptop is $100 still. Infact in the richer countries there can even be like a ten percent increase in the price which could help expand manufactoring faster. Imagine replacing all the text books with ebooks in developed countries because now there students have a laptop either the school can afford or that the parents can afford.

I have a nonprofit organization in Haiti and I would truly love to get my hands on these machines for schools here. Everyone is so svery far behind. I have a small school but am working to open schools in Haiti for kids who have never seen the inside of a school. We need so much, but I am very interested in getting in on the ground floor of this project. Thanks so much for helping us all.

The $100 Laptop project has recieved alot of hype and has sparked alot of attention around technology as being the cure for the third world ills. Negroponte delivered a speech at MIT at the iniatial developmental stage of the project. Negroponte stated that when children in rural asia were given the laptop as part of the pilot study, The children's families were amazed at the light source the screen provided.. as there is no electricity in the homes. I believe that this finding alone provides insight on the lack of basic supportive infrastructure for this project to take off and sustain itself. Laptops are not going to better the living condition of those in poverty when basic needs have yet to be met.

I do not understand the concept of criticizing a good work on the basis that some other good work is needed more. If you think another world problem needs addressing or this problem ought to be addressed in a different way, then get at it by all means. I will support your efforts unless I think they are futile or harmful. I am impressed anytime a person does something for someone else. I will be happy if this project succeeds.
I'm all for helping children, but what about the children IN AMERICA!!! who would benefit from this program as well. I think as a nation we have turned our back on OUR OWN children. These poor countries are not going to be able to afford these laptops and even if they can will they have the means to keep a wireless connection much less pay for it!!
I am so sick of people in AMERICA giving more to minorities rather than the people who are U.S citizens. I tried to enroll my kids in a private school here in the city we live, becacuse we are u.s. citizens and not part of a minority we were not affored any typ of help. Something is wrong here!!
