Comments on: Sony to cut PS3 price in Japan, offer new model

Lowering price will likely help drive PS3 sales but the machine's competitiveness still falls short of that of the Wii, analysts say.

I keep seeing this "White" PS3 show up with this story all over the internet. I am getting excited, but I do hope it's not all for nothing. If they only release a black one "like most consumers say" then I will feel like maybe you should of looked at the story more before posting the White PS3 on your site. Many fans are getting excited for this, hope you guys don't like to contribute to false reports.

New model already? PS3 must be near death
by bobby_brady October 9, 2007 8:39 AM PDT
Wii and Xbox360/Halo3 are the main consoles now. Sales for Wii will slow after the novelty wears off and people get tired of the included games. Xbox with Halo3 is aimed at gamers and stole the show for Sony.

360 had the elite, new modle means nothing
by Chase211 October 9, 2007 10:50 AM PDT
If Sony having a new modle means the console is dead then microsofts 360 was dead with the creation of the elite? Sony has been mixing up its SKUs for months now and its a trend that will continue, your a fool.

***** the price is too high then that they are cutting prices...crazy...no crazy would be buying a console with a 33% fail rate (RROD FTW).

I own all 3 consoles (though I barly play the 360 because of lack of good titles and the wii for the same reason pluss the fact that it can't run on my HDTVs native resolution so it looks so awefull its hard to play) and the PS3 is by far the one I enjoy the most.

No PS2 compatibility
by techned October 9, 2007 1:57 PM PDT
I don't mind not having PS1 compatibility but lacking PS2 does not really justify the price.

Of the Next Gen, the only console to have 100% compaitbility is the Wii.

Sony should have done us all a favor and kept the discontinued 20gb model around - it's basically the same as the 40gb but had both PS1 and PS2 compatibility and still had the same retail price point.

This is great news.

This new model will only help the PS3 achieve it's sales goals quicker, which is great news. In looking at the bigger picture, this move also provides the cheapest entryway into the Blu-ray market just before the holidays. Given that move, it's easy to see why PS2 backward compatibility and the extra USB ports were dropped.

I'm a current PS3 owner, and offering the choice on PS2 backward compatibility is a good thing. It doesn't affect the playability of PS3 games at all, so that's a much better approach than Microsoft not including a hard drive with all models.

There are some amazing games coming out for the PS3, and they will definitely sell systems. I just received the demo disc for Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and it is absolutely jaw dropping. It looks and plays like a Pixar cartoon come to life, and it's a ton of fun.

Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo 5, and Metal Gear Solid 4 are just a few of the console exclusives that will help keep the momentum building for the PS3. Given the fact the newest PS3 model contains a Blue-Ray player and a hard drive still, it makes it a heck of a bargain compared to any of the XBox 360 SKUs.

...Sony's PR and marketing departments get PS3s??? For free?

Silly me...of COURSE you do. After all, with all that build-up of PS3 back inventory, the company has to do SOMETHING with all those unsold consoles.

Shill.
Sony hates consumers
by benjwah October 9, 2007 10:12 PM PDT
This is a terrible deal. It doesn't cost anything to have PS2 compatibility using software emulation, the reason they are taking it out is to differentiate.
Just because they improved the deal from "killing your dad and screwing your mom" to just "screwing your dad", doesn't mean it's all of a sudden a good deal.
Make no mistake, they hate you, the consumer. They think you're all ungrateful for not buying their PS3 at $599 and have stomped and kicked all the way to this point.

Software Emulation?
by thepres14 October 10, 2007 6:35 PM PDT
I thought that the PS3 basically had a PS2 built into it to play the old games, which would justify cutting it out to save costs. I know that the PS2 had a original playstation built into it, as in the actual hardware. So it would be costing them to keep it in, when it is a feature that not everyone would need. I personally don't have any playstation 2 games (and never would buy an old game now for my xbox 360 either, they just aren't the same anymore with high definition now). Also, people have to consider that Sony is losing a lot of money on each PS3, they sell them below cost and make money off the games.

This is also the reason why the xbox 360, which does use software emulation (which is very difficult to do) does not have all the original xbox games available on 360 yet, each game must be worked out individually, as console games are designed to work in perfect tandem with the console.

These days I am not really a huge fan of Sony, but I do think that this new model might be a good decision for them.

Still too expensive
by tessenmacher9903 October 11, 2007 3:34 AM PDT
Sony may be cutting the price, and offering different models, even one that is not compatible w/PS2 games. But the price itself for all versions of the PS3 is still way too expensive for the average consumer. I have been playing the Sony game systems since the original came out. Wouldn't play another, but with out a comparible price to the Wii, I will keep my PS2 and consider buying the Wii. Sony needs to keep their consumers in mind when pricing these things out. I understand the better the technology the more things get expensive, but to make it so high the average person can't buy one is rediculous. A 10% price cut is still not enough for me to consider buying one.

PS3 is confusing
by Teddy72 October 14, 2007 10:02 AM PDT
First off, PS3 is way too expensive. Secondly, I'm cobfused by their different models and how some are compatibility with PS2 games and some are not. What kind of an idiot company would make a new console that is not compatible with their customers games? That's upsetting.
