poll Pac-Man or Space Invaders? Frogger, maybe? Cast your vote for which game was the best of that bygone era.

You'd need to offer 100 choices

Defender, Robotron, Bezerk, Phoenix, Pleiades, Breakout, Arkanoid, Qbert...my personal favorite is Black Widow, which hardly anyone knows.

Of the above list I had to go with Tron, because I liked the variety as a kid, and frankly it was pretty easy.

The two best games of the 80's not on the list? I'd still kill to have those games in my house.

Mario Bros.
by alaskaayers June 17, 2007 9:01 PM PDT
It should have been made clear that the survey was for SUPER Mario
Bros. and not the arcade Mario Bros. Two completely different
games that would have garnered different votes. I still think Pac
Mac reigns supreme.

Mario Bros

I believe the poll results are skewed as well. There's a lot of people without "arcade" experience that would instantly vote for Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros had no business in the poll. They should have featured Mario Bros, the original arcade game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Bros.

Hands down. Spent more time at this machine than almost all of the others combined. Still to this date, my all-time favorite.

Star Castle!

My video store that rented Beta and VHS had Star Castle and Crystal Castle (didn't like this one) but spent all my quarters on Star Castle! Classic 1980 baby!

Missile Command - #1

Asteroids took way too much focus - only the seriously gifted (if twisted) gamers need enter. Missile Command was a happy blend of entertainment and challenge.

Mr. Do was great!
by farthing01 July 20, 2007 2:18 PM PDT
Anyone remember Mr. Do. The clown that dropped apples (and rocks, was it?) on letters that chased him through the underground tunnels Mr. Do dug as he ran. I really like that one; go figure.

What about Space Wars?
by dmm August 1, 2007 8:02 AM PDT
Had some cool semi-realistic physics: engines provided acceleration, not speed; you could have a star that attracted your ship; crashing into the other ship destroyed both ships; ships could take damage but still work at reduced levels; the "universe" could be closed or wrap-around.

But most importantly, you could play TWO players with only ONE quarter.

LOVED SPACE WARS
by cyclone2164 August 10, 2007 6:45 AM PDT
dmm, you are absolutely right! In the 80s, I worked for a large amusement park in Pittsburgh PA. We had all of the best 80s games, but by far the most fun was Space Wars. It was cool how you could create your own environment, heavy gravity, light gravity, closed boarders or open. However, SW was not a big money maker for us. People would look @ that consol with all of those buttons and walk away b/c it was to confusing to the average player.
Batte Zone is the best. It's the first 3D game.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS GAME
by vasajr March 6, 2008 6:10 PM PST
I remember playing the absolute best video game ever at the Kroger while my Mom did her grocery shopping in the mid or late 80's. This is a vague description, I know. You're in space on this track that starts surrounded by stands of cheering fans. You zoom off on a futuristic aerodynamic moped like thing. I think you may have had to ride through sphere-like objects to get points. I can't remember the other obstacles, but it seams like it was a narrow track through space and you would return passing through the crowded stands. Anyone remember this game? It was incredible.
