Typical Misogyny
She's a self-hater! The fact of the matter is that she knows nothing. Who is this chick!? She probably thinks all women want is romance!

I enjoy an adrenaline rush, I like violence, and I like sadist/masochistic characters. It's just the way I am. Now, speaking on the behalf of others like myself, this offends me on an extremely ludacris level.

The ONLY thing I think she got right is "While it's true that both male and female characters display the common heroic traits of being young, strong, virile and fertile, Ray said, only the female characters display physical traits humans get when they're ready for sex: partially open mouths with large red lips, heavy eyelids (or "bedroom eyes"). "

Fine, I don't particularly get a thrill out of watching other women's bady parts flying around on the screen. On the other hand where does she get off saying to interview the characters?

INTERVIEW!? WHO EVEN WATCHES THESE THINGS!?

I can deal with unlocking different styles like in evil zone. Maybe we can change this to "Character Profiles". Oh wait, we all ready have those! Idiot.

Name:
Fighting Style:
Favorite Food:
Favorite Acitivity:

This is okay. And it's pretty simple, most of the time the characters have some interesting things.

As for "Don't trivialize the importance of the emotional experience,"...

What the ****!?

Look, as far as emotions go, make us fall in love with a character, have a huge intergalactic battle and have him DIE. There, emotional. Now we'll all cry for ten minutes or die laughing at the stereotypical portagonist sacrfice.

Either way, that should get us addicted.

Now, " When Ray asked why, the girl said, "I pulled his heart out once, why do I need to do it again?" ".

I can understand somewhat. I don't like monotony, not in videogames, books, movies, scripts... character profiles...
But, that's simple monotony, nothing in this implies she cared that it was gorey at all. In fact, that was probably the dumbest conclusion this chick came to.

Hello??? Everyone knows this. RPG games will take you to the same place for different missions and different parts of a story line; They don't make you kill the same person over and over again, unless you're stupid.

Lastly, yes, dress the girls up a little more, I don't relate very well to little teenage ****** wearing excessive amounts of make up and trying to SEDUCE her enemy. See ICO.

I'm not much of a gamer. I'll probably play a little bit once a month on a weeked for a few hours. I've always liked nintendo, the NES game console is practically the same age as i am. I remember playing my ninja turtle and sesame street games on it. I never really like xbox that much, and didn't buy many games for it and the gameplay for most were too hard for me, while i'm an intense street fighter player and could kick but XD. I like the ds games and wii looks awesome, i've played on it before. But aside from nintendo games which are very universal in targeting both genders, i really like the Rpg games from japan. Final fantasy and kingdom hearts have amazing characters and graphics as well as a story to tell. I got into to them after i got into anime. Love love love kingdom hearts, it's my new fangirl obsession.

This is not entirely true. I am a girl gamer and I love adrenaline based games. I do love a good RPG for the story but I also love tearing my way through a massive lvl of enemies - I tend to get a bit bored when i'm watching more of the game than playing it. What I DON'T want in my games however are ******** looking female characters, nudity or sexual content. M for Mature is getting away with way too much. Everytime I go to the store for a new game my options are smaller and smaller as more and more games are rated for nudity and sexual content. Video games are about defeating the enemy not watching strippers or having sex when you're bored. In games like GTA a lot of the sexual content is avoidable but there are other games where the sexual content is driven as part of the story and there's no way to get around it. This usually means buying a game for $60.00 and taking it back 2 days later and getting $10.00 for it because it's "open". It's a waste of money time. The ESRB need to invest in actually playing the games they rate or coming up with a better standard for rating sexual content. Everyong was in a uproar over a hidden sex scene in GTA San Andreas and said they would be changing the rating to Adult however I was just up at the game store and saw 4 games with "Nudity" / "Partial Nudity" / "Sexual Content" rated M for Mature. Are you serious? If they want more girl gamers then stop making female characters who look like they belong on a pole.

Good grief! I am boggled over the idea that anybody, male or female, thinks that all men or all women like the same kinds of games. Of course there are girls and women who like shooters, and guys who don't. I don't entirely agree with the article, but I do think there is a vast, untapped market for games that would appeal to the kinds of women(and men) who prefer less violence and leveling, and more story/romance/mystery, etc. As the technology gets better, games are starting to feel like inter-active movies, so doesn't it make sense that the genres should include more variety? As a comparison, it's like I went to the book store and there were two romance novels, half a dozen fantasy novels, a kids section, a puzzle section, and the rest of the shelves were crammed to over-flowing with sports, horror and action.

Let's go through this article piece by piece.

Apparently 90% of gamers are male and I don't think it would be a huge streth to assume an even greater percantage of developers must be male as well. If this is true then from an economic standpoint it makes no sense for video game developers to try to understand women. It's not that they can't understand women it's that there is no reason to.

Of course, doesn't explain WHY the population ratios are so one-sided. To explain that will have to take a look at a deeper problem.

Sheri Ray said
"While it's true that both male and female characters display the common heroic traits of being young, strong, virile and fertile, Ray said, only the female characters display physical traits humans get when they're ready for sex: partially open mouths with large red lips, heavy eyelids (or "bedroom eyes"."

The reason men are not sexualized as much as women in video games or ANY meduim whatsoever is because of gender roles. Not because men don't understand women.

In the animal kingdom, sperm is cheap and eggs are expensive. Because sperm is cheap men are predestined to be the provider and protector of women and women the reproductive reward to virtious men. Men must engage in brutal even violent competition with one another to obtain reproductive rights. Women get their reproductive rights by virtue of their own existence (that is of course if they aren't really really ugly), but at the cost of being more fragile physically speaking especially during pregnancy. For men, the consequences of sex are virtually non-existent awhile for women the consequences of sex are very high.

As a result of all these biological differences, women are generally going to be less competitive and more risk-aderse than men - two qualities that are detrimental to liking video games. "Gaming" by its very nature is a competitive activity, virtual or not.

Now let me be clear, Ray is very observant in pointing out that women aren't exactly treated equally to men in video games, but she doesn't go far enough. If she took the analysis of gender roles to their ultimate conclusion she would understand why video gaming is an INTRINSICALY male activity and even if we did de-sexualize women the personality traits that are biologically hardwired into women would still make them adverse to video gaming.

Ray saids we ought to add an emotional component to video games. The best game I can think of that does this Final Fantasy X. The thing though is Final Fantasy X counts as both a game and a movie. The basic run-through of the game not counting the side quests is virtually 50% gameplay and 50% movie. The gameplay involves fighting enemies, collecting weapons and items, "navigating" through hostile areas, etc awhile the movie portion of the game provides all the story and character elements.

So what's the problem? Well the problem is the story and the gameplay are two different things. Gameplay is a competitive activity awhile story is something you sit down and watch. This is bad news for female gamers because what is shows is that girl gamers only like video games to the extent they are like movies and not to the extent they are games.

I understand that I am using a very strict definition of what a game is, but this is extremely important if you want to understand why the gaming community is adverse to appealing to women.
