I like Nintendo as much as the next gamer, but enough is
enough. Ten years ago, enough calls to 1-800-255-3700 about
how dumb "Ultra" 64 was made them think to change the name
of that console.
Dolphin is the name they ought to use, but that's the name they
use for every home console in development (old issues of Next
Generation and EGM states this in Project Reality articles for
N64).
Branding is the most important thing. Whether or not N pulled a
profit isn't the point . . . Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin and Guns 'n'
Roses sell 90% on good band names, a movie like, say, Die
Another Day will do better than Today You Die, or Two Weeks
Notice . . . a TV show does well also on this (Law & Order,
Survivor, CSI compared to The War at Home, Brothers and
Sisters), and lastly for my branding concept . . . cars! Which sold
better? Calling a Chevy Xtreme an S-10 or that dumb name? I
know people who bought an Xtreme and ripped the logo off of
the back of the care. What about a Ford Edsel from way back
when? Sounds like a train, which a Ford Mustang sounds like car
with power and fun to drive.
Nintendo needs a slap in the head on this Wii crap. Being always
in the black (somehow) in profits has got to them again.

I have no faith in this company, they are the biggest wasters of plastic...ROBB robot, Power Pad, and of course, Virtual Boy. This new system is going to confuse people, and honestly, how many times can mario rescue the princess? The Nintendo 64? At least they respect Commodore enough to steal the name.
"how many times can mario rescue the princess?"
How many times can man kill aliens? As long as they keep it refreshing, new, and entertaining, they will always have people coming back for more. Sorta like Sonic.
"ROBB robot, Power Pad, and of course, Virtual Boy"
Yep, all flops, really. Let's compare that to their success': NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, Nintendo 64, Gamecube (they profited), Gameboy, GBA, GBA SP, Nintendo DS, NDS-Lite (seems to be doing well.)
I've seen plastic wasted way more in the form of filler PS1/2 games than the simple hardware flops Nintendo had.

One merely has to look at SONY's very stupid UMD on PSP fiasco to see why, as the competition driven by greed alone lacks the basic smarts to win the game!
Choices!!!!!!!!
Nintendo simply knows you must double the income from
outgo. For every system you see new sold for them at launch,
minus 66.6% of the price and you get the total cost for them per
unit. Games, too.
not to mention royalites of the yazoo everytime pokemon is
shown on WB or Cartoon Network.
Art? Pshaw! Art needs funding.
UMD movies aren't selling at the GAmeStop I work at near UNLV
and few other stores in the surrounding area. Something about
portable DVD players being easier to use and cheaper.

Gee, "Firestarter" sounded like a cool name. Why does everyone associate something else with it?
I would have bought a Revolution, because its something outstanding and new. But would i buy a Wiihatever? no!

Granted I like the idea of being able to use the controllers in many diiferent situations, like in Madden and Red Steel, but I'm afraid this might become something "gimicky" like how 3D viewing is in movies from like the 50's and 70's; it's possible that the controllers may have sidelined the system as a niche product and the industry may see it as much. But the upside is that it worked very well for the Nintendo DS with its two touch screen, of course that system's best software are mostly puzzle games and virtual pet simulators; unlike Gameboy Advance - a basic game system that has a wide variety of great games.
If the Wii is going to be taken more seriously, it should get more original content titles from the third party publishers - like Final Fantasy (not the cutesy generic action-RPG Crystal series) and Omnimusha, and more adult themed games like Silent Hill and GTA (with the possibity of upgrading the firmware to include parental control for the hardware to enforce the rating system, like in most DVD systems). Another idea is to have also have more multiplayer online content - like City of Heroes or even a Street Fighter II online-type game.
Granted that Nintendo will still bring out gaming gems for Wii, like Links or Mario, but the hits have to still keep on coming from other game pblishers and at a constant rate, like it does for the competition, not take long breaks as it does in Gamecube.
My Two Cents,
Ned
- The Wii library is starting to look Wii poor.

- I've just looked at the E3 list of games and though there is interest in Wii game development - except for Sadness, it seems the major publishers will more or less be pushing either "kiddie" games or anything that has a licence attached to hit (like James Bond, Tom Clancy, sports, ect.), like it was with Gamecube. This does not bode well for the system since it sticks the Wii in the "syndicated" category, like UPN - great content but still considered a third rate network at best.
