I abandoned enrollment once they required a credit card for "free" access.

actually, while a free membership does require information of where you would pay from for an account, it doesn't have to be credit card information.

Second Life accepts PayPal and as such, requires the relative information for that avenue of payment.

this isn't to sneak in a charge along the way somewhere, Linden Lab garners this information for both account identification and to keep "at the ready" in case one decides to move into a Premium account and/or enter the land tier system and the purchasing of land.

feel free to come by and give it a try.
...Paranoid, aren't you?

Read the EULA. It mentions that they have to warn you before adding any charges, so that's one down. Then, of course, you don't want to take five days just to buy or sell your L$ or pay on your huge plot of land, now do you?

Land Fees Not Accurate
by September 9, 2005 7:20 AM PDT
"...new land sells for about $129. Users must pay a fee of about $25 a month to maintain their land." This is really leaving out a lot of information. You can spend anywhere from $9.95 to $195 per month. There are various tiers in between. And yes, if you buy the land from auction, it averages around $129. However, land speculators buy these large chunks and divide them up for sale at lower prices.
