I can't see why people like the PS3. There's no compelling reason to buy it, the price will surely be horrendous, and the power of the Cell will 100% surely not be utilized, so the Revolution is the educated way to go.
and what exactly did Nintendo educate you about...how NOT to release a next gen product...why did they even bother to show up...it's not like they didn't know E3 was this week and all they show up with is a shiny black box...oh i'm scared...and we've seen the DS
1) Next-generation graphics power for immersive gaming.
2) Backwards compatibility with an enormous archive of good games spanning two generations.
3) Internal hard drive ? at least the PS3 would have the capacity to hold the downloadable back catalog of games that Nintendo is supposed to offer.
4) While you state that the power of the Cell will not be utilized to 100%, it would appear that the Revolution will only be able to give around 40 gigaflops maximum, compared to the teraflops of the PS3. That's like the Cell running at 2% (my Maths is probably wrong, but that's amazing). I'm quite sure that the Cell will be running greater than 50%...

Both of the consoles I want will be backwards compatible and not just with the top selling games.
Not every one is going to agree on whether they like the looks of the PS3, Revolution, and the XBox 360. Aesthetically the PS3 looks the nicest to me. The Revolution looks nice if a bit plain. I also think Microsoft should have hired Playskool to design their console. They couldn't have made it any uglier than Microsoft did.
When it comes to games Sony and Nintendo already have the games I want to buy and/or play and its look like it will stay that way. I cannot say the same about Microsoft's selection.

They stated that the Xbox 360 will be compatible with their top sellers. However that doesn't exactly give us a lot of information. Are they talking the 2 top sellers, the 5 top sellers, the 10 top sellers? And what is a top seller? Is it a game they sold the most copies of or a game they made the most money selling?
While it's possible the final version may be truly backwards compatible, Microsoft's statement doesn't exactly fill me with hope.
Surely a chance at 75% of your current game collection being playable on 360 is better than NO compatibility with the PS3 (and your Xbox games). With the Xbox 360, at least you'll be able to play the ones you're most likely to go back to ? ie, Halo, Halo 2 etc...
Microsoft has finally revealed how the Xbox360's backwards compatibility will work: it doesn't.
Because of the radically different hardware in the 360, it is simply impossible to play Xbox software on it without being completely recompiled; this means that if you want to play Halo and other Xbox titles, you'll have to get an Xbox360 version of the game. Theoretically, it's easy (and hopefully cheap) to take an Xbox game and remake it as a 360 game, so any company that wants to do it should have no problem; but that's still not what I call backwards compatible, and there's no guarantee that any game other than the biggest ones will get the upgrade. Looks like I'll be keeping by Xbox.

that XBox 360 is the Pontiac Aztec of video game consoles!!! They couldn't have made it look worse if they tried! I really like the styling of the Revo, but thats about all I like about it. I have to vote for the PS3 overall because they seem to be more on focus than Microsoft in regards of working to make the game developers lives easier. My only complaint with the PS3 is that it looks a tad bulky.
I think the Cell will be a considerable challenge for developers ? competely different architecture and way of thinking.
I would also note, that the PS3 controller isn't exactly a design winner... focus on the hardware and the games... at least the 360 looks easier to conceal than the PS3, as the PS3 looks really ugly in the horizontal position.

There is so much information missing regarding the consoles. One important omission is the price. If one console is half the price of another, then this certainly can change the answer to the question!

I think the biggest surprise will be next year when Nintendo releases its new controller and Mario 128. Both have been in development for a long time now, and are going to be great.

We have yet to hear how much any of these three systems will set us back. Will they be reasonable priced? Or will we be calling them PAY-Station 3, Xbox $360, and Ripoff-lution?

I just felt I had to reply to this.. For all of you said and claimed that the only good game for Xbox was Halo or Halo 2, I think you don't know anything about the console. Let me list off a few games to help your brain's incompetency. First off:
Project Gotham Racing 1+2 Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind KoToR 1+2 Jade Empire Doom 3 Unreal Tournament 2 Forza Motorsport Conker: Live and Reloaded Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge Dead or Alive 3 Ninja Gaiden The list goes on...
You see, your argument about the Xbox only having Halo and Halo 2 is so void and far from the truth that it's hard to take any credibility into account when you look further into your opinion. You people love to toot your Final Fantasy and Kill Zone horns, it's almost sad to me. Oh, and just to break your fragiles hearts, Square Enix is developing a FF for the Xbox 360. Funny how you've lost your trump card in it all, I guess that's just the world of business.
And then you people say that the Xbox 360 is ugly, what's so ugly about it?? Is it just a matter of YOUR OPINION?? You people take your opinions as if they're prophetical messages from someone who knows the gaming industry so well that you can say such. And, anyone ever heard the saying "function over form"? You obviously have lost sight of anything like that. And, I also must say, those graphics that you saw at E3 for PS3, the extremely photo-realistic ones.. those were all STILLS. If Sony even tried anything like that on their console that actually moved and added thousands upon thousands of animations and characters, it would make the thing lag out so badly that your PS3 would almost die from the strain. Unless you're saying that the PS3 holds thousands of processing RAM to carry such a weight.
The last I heard, they were porting FF XI over to the XBox. That's not really the same thing as developing, as the game already exists. While I heard that Square-Enix was interested in the XNA architecture, I think part of their reasoning is that it will make it easier for them to develop for both a console and a PC, meaning any games they do develop for the XBox360 will probably be ported to PC.
Besides, many of the games you mention are also available for PC; they aren't exclusive to the XBox. KoTOR and KoTOR II might almost have been enough to encourage me to get an XBox, but I just had to wait a little longer and get them for the PC.
And therein lies one of the problems the XBox has. Many of its good games are not exclusive, letting people like me who don't want the box to avoid getting the box. So, while your point is entirely valid, it doesn't quite refute ours that most of the games to the XBox are disappointing. The other problem is that most of the other good games aren't exclusive to the XBox, and if this continues, I still have no compelling reason to purchase either the XBox or the XBox 360.

With all this hype going around - how much is this REALLY going to cost us? Any predictions. Mine:
XBox 360: $349 PS3: $449 Revolution: $199
Nintendo has to stay at the lower end, since it sees itself as mainly gaming. XBox 360 will be a bit costly for its hard disk, and the PS3 even more with Cell and Blue Ray.
We've discussed this a little farther up the chain and there are two ways of looking at it. The way you discussed addresses the "minimize losses, but charge for good technology" approach, which is the way most game system launches were done until Xbox. Typically, this results in the hardcore buying your console first, then the midcore, and just about everyone else holding off unless you've got a money tree.
What Microsoft has done in recent history is to sell at a total loss, then rely on subscription services and game sales to fuel the machine. It's possible that will become the going business model for the next generation, but it remains to be seen.
