What's with all the crying about the outside?
by Nino Nice May 14, 2005 11:10 AM PDT
What's with all the crying about the outside?
It's about the new technology in the higher Res graphics and
gameplay.
Everybody is acting like their not going to play it and just look at
it.
Never judge what's on the outside, it's the inside that is going to
really tell if it rocks or flops.
You might be very surprised at what it can do.
Lets all what and see?
Later.
Nino.

Had to wait then hunt around for the crystal Xbox to match my
silver/white tv/vcr & the black/green Xbox was UGLY man. This
one is sweet though it looks like something with that 'designed
by Apple in Calif..' tag on the box - but then thats no bad thing
IMO. At least they're learning!

Bigger its better?
by May 15, 2005 11:08 AM PDT
I think Msoft miss on the look of the new xbox, they should made it smaller and keep the black-flourescent green, now its only to see how it works, but Msoft better realize that this nex-gen gamers are very unforgiving when companies make mistakes, it will cost them big bucks (sega, dreamcast)bigger isn't better considering that now most high-res. chips and technology are getting smaller why try to take too much of my space on my entertaiment center? -j

They have good reson for the goofy look
by May 18, 2005 2:29 PM PDT
Marketing research has shown the new X-box appeals to a more general customer base. Especially in Japan (a huge gameing market all on it's own.) The first X-box was the biggest bomb to hit japan since world war 2. People there thought it was big and ugly. A powerhouse it was, but you are now marketing to a culture who believes capability should not come at the expense of "coolness". They Ignored Japan with their first launch, and it hurt them. Remember the original controllers... They were too big to fit in the hands of most Japanese consumers comfortably. Why buy a system you can't really use. I don't care for the look either, but it is comforting to see microsoft is learning from their mistakes, rather than using their marking force to push something no one really wants.

This could be very interesting for Apple if it actually runs Apple's OSX!
by Terrence Koonce May 15, 2005 8:14 PM PDT
This could be very interesting for Apple if the XBOX 360 actually
could run Apple's OSX!

I don't know if it would hurt Apple's computer profits if the XBOX
360 can be easily modified to run OSX or if it would help Apple's
Software sales.

I see alot of people buying a 199 XBOX 360 and modifying it
with Apple's OSX than spending 499 for a Mac Mini. Then they
could play games and have a unit that runs OSX.

Is this a plan from Microsoft to cut into Apple's Hardware sales
by making a low cost console that uses Apple's G5 processor? If
so, could such a plan actually backfire by allowing Apple to sell a
version of OSX just for the XBOX 360? Things could get very
interesting!

did anyone ever say the xbox 360 was using a G5 processor? no. because it's not.

these are custom processors designed to power a gaming console, not off-the-shelf parts.

and the day xbox 360 becomes $199 would probably be in the next couple years. even then, it would probably come without a hard drive. hmmm, how would you put OSX on a system without a HD?

keep dreaming...
forget that
by May 16, 2005 2:19 PM PDT
It is NOT using a G5. It's using the same PowerPC Core instruction sets as the G5. At the higher levels it is completely different. Plus it interfaces with hardawre never before used on a Mac.

Ask anyone whose ever tryed writing Mac drivers before, it's a pain in the...

Apple is one of the few Computer vendors who still makes a profit on thier hardware, so dont expect them to undercut their own profits with a cheap X-box OS. The modding community is generally more experianced with linux platforms already, so I would expect linux mods sooner than mac mods.

I like macs too, but the mac community needs to get a grip on reality. It's nearly a dead platform. From the user end, it looks great, but who would even want to develop for it. Unless you're apple, Mac development is a money pit. I'm not holding my breath for that one.
360 vs. PS3
by May 16, 2005 1:28 PM PDT
The biggest determining factor will be content. The PS2 had a 1 year lead on the original X-box. With more titles available, even when the x-box launched, Sony still had a more desirable product. All in spite of the fact that hardware wise, the x-box was superior. This time it seems the role is reversed. the 360 will be first to market, but the ps3 will be superior in processing power. It should be intresting to see where this ends up.

360 does have one clear advantage that I can see. The X-box platform has been easier to develop for. That will lure in the upstart developers. Not to mention that it's hardware lends to easier PC and Mac ports of games, giving developers a little more flexability.

The real battle will be fought with title licensing. The big ones are Halo for microsoft, and GTA and Final Fantasy for Sony. Watch them struggle to buy up exclusive rights (or at least inital release rights). The winner in this battle will not be the coolest looking system, but the company with the most buying power.

Past stunts, old franchises, all the stuff we're used to seeing will have to be drastically revised, or thrown away. It's a whole new game here.

I agree with u 100% and whats with the complaining with the way it looks, have u seen the screenshots for this monster. It may look ugly but thus far it packs a punch, mind u im not an xbox fan i rarely ever play mine. I'm more into roleplaying games my self and xbox was obviously not intended for such games. It only has a few but i know many who love it. In the end its all going to wind down to what games are they going to keep producing, and who is going to launch first wich xbox is obviously going to win, i mean these things are probably going to cost 500-600$. Who's going to buy two. Well i might lol.

What about the Revolution?
by Matt Tierney September 18, 2005 7:43 PM PDT
It is going to be much better than both the Xbox 360 and the
PS3. FREE online play, compatability to all previous games for all
previous Nintendo consoles, cheap, compact, and a new,
inovative controler that will sense movement and is wireless.

(Don't just look at the screenshot, read the article. It is better
than it looks.)

By the way, Sony and Square Enix had a dispute and Square Enix
has announced that it will be developing for the Revolution.

I am sorry u are correct. Still none the less going back to my point its still going to be expensive. I also love final fantasy, but ffxi is, in my eyes, only a cheap rip off of the series. I hate that they took a great rpg and turned it to a mmorpg and on that note if u r such a pc gammer why here? Im a gammer period i play them all. Ohh ya half life 2 sucks.

The Death of PC Gaming?
by May 18, 2005 8:08 AM PDT
I hate to admit it, but MS might be signing the death of PC Gaming as we know it. The new XBox will now rival the top PC out there for a while now. Why? Well, considering that PC users just now have a hold of dual core technology, which has no use yet. While AMD and Intel bicker over who releases what first and when, MS has equipped their XBox with a triple core PowerPC processor (designed by IBM, company that defined the acronym PC, ironic). Therefore, games will now use dual core, but only because of the XBox, not because of Intel or AMD. The Xbox also uses the latest ATI R500 core, something that PC users have been waiting along time for. What do we get? Evolved technology off the R400 core for the last year or so. While we plunk down $500+ for a "tweaked" video card, the new XBox gets ATI's latest technology that PC's will not see for years, not even in the R520 core destined to arrive for PC's this year. ATI's loyal PC fans put them on the map and I can not help but feel betrayed.

I have learned that MS writes the rules and with their new XBox they will now dictate new hardware trends along with game technology. Look at all the supposed PC only games that were released for the XBox first while PC Gamers had to wait another year before we receive it. I will give MS credit for one thing, the way they have snuck into the console market and almost but cornered and controlled it like they have for the PC market. Technology will now be based on what MS decides, such as games supporting dual cores, like mentioned above. This PC Gamer is sad to admit that PC Gaming might be an after thought in the near future as consoles become mini PC's, only more proprietary.

Yes and No
by May 18, 2005 2:19 PM PDT
In Many ways, the PC is already dead for gamers. It is very expensive to maintain, and not the target of most major developers. But Consoles are fixed systems. The hardware only changes about every 5 years. A PC can be modified by the user to facillitate new technologies that may not have been common in games when the consoles were designed. If you want the cutting edge, you can't beat a PC, especially in times like this when the current generation of consoles are comming to the end of their run. Is it worth having a $6000 - $10,000 PC to try a new concept game that will be revised and used in a console game with a year or two. NO. But if you have other needs for a highend PC, (3D design, Video editing, etc.) then you are always a step ahead of the mainstream.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What's up with this case, man? If Microsoft is too cheap to hire a professional designer, (which dosen't suprise me)the current case is fine. Maybe streamline the looks and add, like, a green led glow. I don't know. Looks like someone spraypainted one of those slim Dell's boring-color. And what's up with the font on the tray? Work memos' fonts are cooler. Maybe a slot loader? MEH!
