"Don?t be fooled by the seemingly low price. The mini I want, with the larger hard drive, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and 512 MB RAM, costs $803 from Apple?s online store. If you have to purchase a keyboard, mouse, and screen for your new mini, well, the cost can rapidly add up." -- lifted from cnet
so ok i have no monitor, no cheap keyboard, no mouse, and really what you're paying for is a computer with the following specs
ok this is the $500 system
1.25 GHz G4 CPU
167 MHz bus
256 MB of RAM (DDR, 333 MHz)
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive (maximum speeds: 24X CD read; 24X CD-R write; 8X DVD read)
40 GB hard drive ( i cant find what speed the hard drive runs at, but i'd bet $100 it's not 7200 )
Radeon 9200 graphics controller (has 32 MB of dedicated RAM, supports 32 bits per pixel at 1920 x 1200) (yeah running at 1920x1200)
no legacy ports (not applicable to the Macintosh platform) [ HOW then are people supposed to hook up their current keyboard/mouse]
no open drive bays
no PCI slots (AirPort and Bluetooth can be added internally)
NOW for the $500 challenge!!!!!!
how low can you go to make a better PC than the specs above with no monitor, no burner, (but feel free to add any of these) and for an added challenge you can make it a shuttle PC for those that gripe about the size
here's my mock system
---Chaintech - K8T800&64-2800Combo
AMD 64 2800 and fan included with motherboard (so are the USB ports which apple advertises almost like they are something special hahaha)
$171
---Generic 512MB PC2700 DDR Memory
$51
---LINKWORLD LNK-3120D BABY ATX Case Front Dual USB with 300W P4 Power Supply
$21
---VISIONTEK ATI RADEON 9600 XT 128MB DDR
$135
---Seagate - ST380021A 7200RPM 80GB
$48
---NEC 16X DVD/40X CD ROM INTERNAL EIDE DRIVE
$20
that brings me to $446 - all prices include shipping costs and put it together with prices from www.pricewatch.com
from here i would say install some linux goodness on it and you still have $50 left over for whatever microsoft word or whatever you need in that respect
now me personally, i would MUCH rather have the system i threw together when put up against the specs for the mini
let me know what you think and
take the challenge today!!!
of Microsoft Word (and not for $50, either. Office XP, even the
Teacher & Student edition, will set you back another $100.)
Yes, I'm well aware you can steal your copy of Windows. But if
you're going to do that, remove $50 from the total of the Mac
mini for the OEM copy of Panther you essentially purchased.
And, no, those $50 "OEM" copies of Windows you can buy over
the net are not legitimate purchased licenses for Windows.
You also need to buy all that extra software you get for free with
the Mac mini, iLife '05. You'll need Movie Authoring software,
DVD Authoring, and music composition with MIDI support and
sound library.
You're also comparing two completely different form factors.
You want to buy parts for a Mico-ATX, not standard ATX. That
will increase the cost significantly.

Personally I think it would not matter if Apple sold their Mac mini for a dollar. There would still be Windows fan boys knocking it. They're probably on the MS payroll.

other compay's ideas... Microsoft is doing this since ever. In my
oppinion, the lack of imagination and ideas on Redmond lead to
poor products like windows, office and etc.
I use PC products for 2 decades. Professionally I have been
working with unix (solaris and irix) and dealing with MacOs. A
few weeks ago I bought a Mac Mini. What I have to say is: S U P E
R B! No crash in a week. The only thing (yes THING) that crashed
on MacOS was Internet Explorer, on the first page I visited to
test.
I have a Mac and Winblows on a network. Today the Windoze
crashed 6 times while Mac sits and watches all that shame... I
am connecting on the web using Windoze as a router for Mac.
Surprizingly I have tested my bandwidth speed with both
machines and MacIntosh is 100 Kbps faster than Windows, even
being connected thru Winblows. That is simply a prove that
Windows is a very fine piece of cr*p.
Wait until longhorn is out and you will be hurt by it. Remember
that before any long horn there's a raging bull and no one can
trust a raging bull... except that a bull produces bull sh*t...
Move away from Windoze until you can!

REAL reason behind Intel's jabs at Apple is very simple.
As soon as "the masses" figure out that you can run UNIX + MAC
+ LINUX + MS Office for Mac + Virtual PC + convert Open Source
& Linux & Unix code to Darwin MAC OSX code via FREE developer
toolkit X11 with every Mac sold ALL on a 64Bit PowerPC
chip...GEE you don't need Intel & Microsoft anymore...hmmm.
ALTERATE Universe: "the masses" are getting very sick & tired of
all the price guoging, vires, spyware, worms, hackers, security
updates, forced upgrades to new Windows, monopolistic tactics,
etc. & they are converting to Open Source / Linux / Lindows /
FreeOffice with AMD64 Bit chips...they don't need Intel &
Microsoft anymore...hmmm.
Intel's sabers are rattling & UNIX / MAC OSX / LINUX / PowerPC /
IBM / AMD64 are putting up a fierce battlefront.
Monopolies fear "thinking different" & "open competion in the
marketplace"...
FINALLY: NeXT OS was owned by Steve Jobs & incorporated into
the new Mac OSX Unix platform, but was also capable of running
on Intel chips in the past. Rumor has it that during this
"transitional upgrade development" period at Apple + NeXT, that
deep in a vault in Cupertino IS a version of IntelPC-OSX as a
secret weapon "Plan B".
Maybe...maybe not...possible on Intel64 or AMD64?
Only the future will tell.
One more thing, Apple did not create the mini PC, they have been around for years from no name companies, I remember thinking about buying one 3 years ago, Apple just markets it better, and that is a fact.
Intel did this as a way of saying "big deal".
The Mac Mini is a notebook without a keyboard!!! HELLO!!!!??? The genius of Steve Jobs is in realizing that there are people that would actually WANT that and in marketing it well. Apple fans need to wake up and realize that Apple hasnt traded on REAL innovation since the early 90s. Apple is trading on packaging, style and marketing.
There are PCs on a CARD that are used in vertical applications and entire SUBNOTEBOOKS that are scarcely bigger than that Mac Mini (look at the JVC mini-note).
The problem is that Fujitsi, JVC, Samsung and, in some ways, even Sony dont have the prepostrous Messiah figure that jobs presents and arent the media darlings that Apple continues to be. Nor do they have the jihadist followers that FLOOD message boards even though they represent 3% of computer users.

developement that I think is NO accident.
1.Microsoft has been dragging their feet & whittling down
Shorthorn OS that MAY be ready in 2006....
Apple is progressing with the MAC OSX platform & IBM POWERPC
64bit G5 chips, which will soon go PUBLIC as TIGER 64OS in 2Q
2005.
Wait! Stop the presses! Windows XP64 is coming out very soon,
just hold on...Shorthorn's a'comming around the bend...Pay NO
attention those other varmits.
2. Microsoft fails to live up to it's "Secure Computing Innitiative"
with bogus security updates that wreak havoc on XP, 2000.
Linux / Lindows / Open Source / UNIX community still making
strides & stealing customers away from MS.
Citizen Gates gives speach about not trusting the Linux & Open
Source community who LACK standards & are very INSECURE to
developers & large corporations / goverments before they bail
on MS.
3. Apple iPod / iTunes / iTunes Music Store explodes into an
"iPod Nation" phenomenon with record braking sales & stock
prices.
Dell CEO & Citizen Gates quickly dismiss iPods as a "fad" / one
hit wonder out of 3 hits total (all the while spending billions to
rip off iPod & iTunes Music Store).
Citizen Gates is so jealous of Apple's success with the iPod &
Media Hub concept that he issues a corporate wide e-mail at
Redmond forbidding the use of iPod's on campus as "not being
with the proper team spirit".
Citizen gates dismisses Apple as being "just a hardware
company & MS is just a software company." Yet spends billions
of dollars developing the XBOX hardware console device.
4. Apple introduces the Mac Mini in January 2005. Easiest way to
step up to a G4 Mac/Mac OSX / Apple iLife Suite. Great for
"Switchers or Adopters", just plug & play into your existing PC
display, keyboard, mouse peripherals, KVM Switch or TV & GO!
Intel introduces a Mac Mini wannabe hunk of junk plastic silver
painted prototype box in March 2005, NOT A WORKING
prototype with an working OS, just a plastic rip off of a Mac Mini
box...
5. AMD64 chip is making strides into the desktop consumer PC
market with MS-OS's's's/ Linux / Unix / Open Source
community.
Intel & MS quickly put out press releases that we're 64Bit too!
We're GOING to put out consumer desktop 64OS & 64Chips too!
Hold on! We'll solve all yur comput'n problems partner!
Shorthorn's a'commin'! XP64 is comming soon too! (i.e. don't use

means that Macs are the best. Also, I m a Pc user since 20 years
now (using first IBM Pc xt) I never bought Macs because was
expensive and only few software was available. But with all Pc OS
bugs and not user friendly, I recently switch to Mac Mini as it
was affordable for a try, ant result is : I love it, small in size, very
convinient, very friendly user system, all software includes and
system in uncomparable to Windows baser Pcs. I won't be using
my PC anymore. So even a copy of a Mac by Intel is useless for
users. You'll see when they will lauch it, it won't be as successful
as the Mini Mac. A Mac is a Mac !!!!

I could keep the biscuits in it, I guess!
Are Intel getting into the food packaging industry or do they
actually have plans to put something inside? ;-)
