MCE has been here for years
by frankwick September 13, 2006 11:48 AM PDT
I'm not a huge MS fan, but I love my MCE2005. It is a really cool piece of technology. It records TV, plays music, videos, DVDs, FM radio, etc... I have it onnected to my 37" LCD TV via DVI. It has 7.1 THX surround sound.

I can already stream any content wirelessly to other TVs in the house via MCE extenders. (XBOX is an extended, but I don't have one). There are several extenders available including some from Linksys.

It runs fast and reliably. I think Apple has a ways to go before they can catch up. I'm sure Vista will add some new twists to MCE, but MCE2005 is VERY mature.

Apple Q1 2007 starts in OCT 2006!
by Llib Setag September 13, 2006 12:47 PM PDT
When Steve Jobs stated that the code named "iTV" will be issued in Q1 2007, THAT is the 2006 HOLIDAY SEASON, not just January 2007 / MACWORLD EXPO. Paris Expo 2006 started on the same day as this keynote in San Francisco...

Keep your mind & eyes open for what exactly the "iTV" / MacTV, Mac Mini Tv, Mac XBOXTV will be & when it will be for sale...

Where's iTV lacks HANA standard features, Apple!?
by libertyforall1776 September 13, 2006 5:23 PM PDT
Apple seems to completely miss the boat with their new Q1
2007 $299 "iTV" product, it has NO FireWire, and IGNORES the
HANA (High-Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance) standard
which standardizes on FireWire to *control* all A/V devices! Who
cares about a USB port, Apple! :(
See:

FireWire is the new standard to control A/V devices, and Apple
should be LEADING this charge!

Critical Mass
by thedreaming September 14, 2006 7:37 AM PDT
I think Apple and Microsoft have reached critical mass. Basically, both of them can't come up with any new products cause everything has already been done. That's why Apple didn't announce an iphone. It's been done already, why reinvent the wheel?

With Microsoft, we have Vista which is XP, but prettier and very OSX-Like. Better yet than never, but I don't think it's worth the money to upgrade to an os where their only selling point is that they made it more "OSX-Like".

With Apple, everyone and their mother has an ipod, so now they've been labeled as "uncool". Apparently being the #1 mp3 player in the world has killed the coolness factor of the device. What does that mean for Apple? Their sales are starting to drop. It was going to happen, we all new it was going to happen, so they came out with newer nano's, a shuffle the size of a book of matches, and an ipod with better video and a better battery (hope it isn't a sony battery!)

I think I'll check out the shuffle, so I could join the legions of people locked into the Apple DRM.

Wow, where do you start with a comment like that?
by grandmasterdibbler September 17, 2006 7:20 AM PDT
As far as I can tell iPods have not been labelled as uncool, not where I live anyway. As for the sales drop, people don't tend to spend a lot of money on devices in the summer espceially if you take a vacation and I have'nt read about the masses of success Creative and Sandisk are having at the moment either.

As for the, 'legions of people locked into the Apple DRM' you have no idea what you're talking about! What makes Apple's DRM's more restricitve than MS's, if you rent your music I don't know if you can even burn it to a CD which is useless if you need to go on a long car journey or if you need to back it up!

I bought an album of iTunes and my friend now wants a copy and I can make him one so he can do whatever he likes with it!

Whenever people complain about being locked in it just means you haven't had the sense to figure out the incredibly simple ways of getting out of it!
Wireless Bandwith Specs ?
by redison September 14, 2006 8:19 AM PDT
Anyone notice that Steve only mentioned 802.11 as the wireless
spec not A or G?

As reported on Thinksecret yesterday :

".....Of interest, the reference to "802.11 wireless networking"
would seem to imply 802.11n, the as-of-yet unfinished next-
generation wireless standard that will support transfer speeds
about ten times faster than 802.11g, delivering the bandwidth
needed for smooth video streaming.

Final spec 802.11n devices are not expected until mid-2007,
although Apple has previously pioneered the deployment of
other 802.11 standards, suggesting the company may deliver
802.11n networking to Macs early next year, as well. ....."

Maybe this is why they are waiting until next year for iTV

-Robert

PS: as a sidenote does anyone know the the Bandwidth ( Mbps )
requirements for Streaming ( using H.264 )

1) Near DVD Quality

2) DVD Quality

3) HD Quality

802.11
by Seaspray0 September 15, 2006 10:53 AM PDT
There is an 802.11 specification. This specification is a broad ranging spec that deals with wireless (not specifically A,B,G or N)in general. Sub specifications like 802.11G deal with the specifics of a particular wireless, like transmitting on the 2.4 GHZ range. The specs are designed so that you can basically "mix and match" for compatability. For instance, 802.3 specifications apply to the data level of the TCP/IP protocol you transmit over your wireless, reguardless of which one. By mentioning 802.11, Steve indicates that this service should work on A, B, G, or the yet established N wireless networks.
