My 1st Mac, a big mistake....
... or at least that was my impression at that time. Long ago, I
used DOS and Windows, up to 3.1.1 (I think) the I went to LA
tronics and bought this "new windows machine" which cost me
over $3200, it was the PowerBook 165c , it was expensive maily
because I asked for 12 MBs of RAM, it had a great 80 MBs HD.
When I got home and try to run a game I had it wouldn`t run
and that really made me very angry. Now I think about it and I
laugh.
I have owned , that PowerBook, Performa 6300CD, a 4400,
7200, G3 B/W 350Mhz, 3 iBooks and a eMac.
The G3 is our Server, and the eMac the Dj in our Club.
With My Macs I Host our own homepages, that is, our club, our
band and an Event we do every year. Also, I design our WebSite,
Flyers and posters for our parties, Postcards, Business Cards,
Posters, Menus, News Letters and lot of other things. We also
give free internet access to our customer via AirPort, SlideShow
on the bigscreen, and also via the proyector we show iTunes
visualizer.
I do shoping for our club, manage finances and more.
Applications that I used are: Adobe CS, Macromedia MX (By suit
to make it shorter) iLife, iWork EvoCam and all bundled softwafe
exept Chess. We also have Virtual PC for my wife... well she only
uses IE and Exell, I do check how our website looks in windows.
Games? I`ll do that on my PS2 or PSP. And I do also have an iPod
Nano just for the ride.
For a long time I worked on DPT making lots of bucks, then as a
PC consultant, it also makes you rich finxing PCs, it is a great
market. But I loose my customers converting them to the Mac,
they never called me again :(
But they are happy satisfied customers, and that what matters.
Any way,

Thanks Apple for making my life a Party.

No - I prefer peecees...
doh.

I use many platforms every day and have done for decades.

I never have and never will use a Windows PC through choice,
and anyone who does hasn't done their research. Simple.

Apple has got it right.

peecee weenies report back in 2 years and let's check AAPL and
Apple's market share.

Choice, Plus A Fun Fact!
"I never have and never will use a Windows PC through choice,
and anyone who does hasn't done their research."

I'm interpreting this to mean that you only use Windows PCs
when forced to do so, as opposed to it being your choice to
never use a Windows PC. Either way, the comment is ridiculous.
There are things that you can do on Windows that you can not
do on a Mac, and vice versa. They are numerous and go far
beyond games and Microsoft software. However, I've learned to
accept you will never be convinced of this as you do not appear
to apply logic to your commentary.

Fun Fact!

The price of a share of AAPL has dropped about $20 since
January. I'm sure it will go back up, (a quick check of the stock
at the moment reveals a large upswing already in this mornings
trading) but anyone making buys based on your
recommendations has already lost money, or if they hold off for
the price to raise again, minimized their gains. Stick to helping
grandmothers set up their email, and let go your dreams of
investment advisor.

So
every single PC user has purchased one because they were forced. I'm guessing there might be 1 or 2 people out there that are using Windows by choice.

due to the lies that apple spreads and calls marketing. saying their risc processors are as fast if not faster then the Intel chips out, then switching to Intel and saying the new Intel Macs are 3-4 times faster then the old ones... Do even the Cultist Mac users see this as brainwashing?

or how about the fabled dual processor Mac vs. the Dell benchmarking that apple rigged...

or what about Adobe saying on their website that their products run better on a PC until getting heat from Mac users...

come on Mac users... its okay to take criticism.

Mac products are not superior by a long shot. If they were, the public would have made them more then 3% of the market share a long time ago.

and why is apple not sued for anti trust for forcing their users to use an apple operating system on an apple PC and yet microsoft gets sued for including a utilities like Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player with their operating system. the double standard is insane.

That was amazing.

It's not that usual to find so much delusion in one post.

Have you EVER got anything right?

A few things...
Apple didn't lie about the processors. At the time risc
processors were faster and more efficient than their competition
(P3s and P4s). With the introduction of the Pentium M the tide
began to turn. While G5s kept PowerMac speed up to date the
G4 was beginning to show it's age.

The Intel Duo not only smokes previous Pentiums chips, but it is
equivalent to the G5 in many aspects. The G5 has no future
(especially in portables), hence the switch to Intel. So there's no
deception on Apple's part. The benchmarks of 3-4x faster are
clearly stated for specific benchmarks and applications that take
advantage of both processors. (And yes there are applications
today that show Dual Core MacBooks are several magnitudes
faster than it's predecessor.)

I use both Macs and PCs. I use PC tablets at work for patient
charting. I can tolerate Windows, but several times a week I do
feel like smashing the machine (this is without spyware or
viruses). I've never bought a PC for personal use, and now with
the ability to dual boot Mactels, I will never buy a PC.

My History:
Apple ][ plus -=> upgraded to 64K!
Apple Color Macintosh
Apple Performa 6500 -> upgraded to 300mhz G3
HP Brio -> upgraded to 500mz P2 (A gift)
G4 Dual 500mhz
12" Powerbook
15" Powerbook
60gb iPod Photo, 6gb Mini(wife), 4gb Nano, 2gb Nano (son),
iPod Shuffle (now used as a flash drive)

LOL
The overwhelming majority of home PeeCee users, have one for
just three reasons:

1. The believed PeeCee's (ha ha) were cheaper.

2. People they knew had PeeCee's (see reason #1), and that's
what got recommended to them.

3. They use a PeeCee at work and don't know anything else.

For the masochists out there that use a Windoze based PeeCee
by choice, nothing said by anyone will change your minds.

Seriously, I prefer Windows 3.5 or 95 and Mac OS 7.6.1 on old,

Just websites are too Shockwave and Java intensive these days to
run these machines.

Apple is just part of my collection
I own an Apple iMac G5 and an iPod. I bought the iPod because I preferred the AAC format. I bought the iMac shortly after the Intel announcement because I wanted a PPC version. I've always appreciated Motorola chip designs and had wanted a Mac for a long time but never really had the funds.

The iMac is only part of my collection though. I have three SuSE Linux machines (Opteron, Athlon64 X2, and P3), one WinXP P4, and four Amigas. I like OS X, but then again I like GNU/Linux and AmigaOS too. I'm not very keen on Windows, but it serves its purpose.

I have used Apple Products since the birth of the Apple IIe. I currently own both a Power Mac G4 Dual 1GHz tower and a Powerbook 17-inch Aluminum. I use Macs because they work and don't have the problems found with Windows OS machines.

I'll never go back to a PC again
Bill Gates owes me several months of my life I wasted upgrading various versions of Windows. I just couldn't take all the crashes, security problems, etc. Too much wasted time and lack of productivity-- computers were supposed to make things more efficient, remember? Plus the Windows GUI is so uninspired, so utilitarian. PCs are like Ford Explorers and Macs are like BMWs. Windows is like Eastern Europe before Glasnost, and OS X is like Florence in the summertime. I switched to a Mac after 16 years of imprisonment in PC-land, and I will NEVER go back.

Botjh, but lean more to Windows
I have Macs and PC's, I have tried in the past to go Mac only, but it just doesnt work. I never have problems with my PC's(mostly because I build my own, with high quality parts) I have on the other hand had problems with my macs, very bizzaro problems too. Nothings perfect but I'll stick with Windows for programming and my mac for creating graphics and what not, Other than that, the Mac is pathetic when it comes to games, and can be very sloooow at times. Mostly my mac sits there in the corner showing pretty pictures on its 23"hd display. My 17" Powerbook, is a paperweight or a firestarter. The damn thing gets so hot and runs so slow im sick that I even bought it. As far as iPods? I stick with my Creative Zen's (2 generations now) and see what comes along the next few years. I do like OS X but its still lacks some very important Features that I am used to in the Windows world.
Too bad Apple doesnt sell OS X for the masses, I think their hardware sucks, it pretty, but it still sucks.

Hmm guess I'll switch
Ok, lots of ppl seem to love their macs, I loved it too after just 15 mins of using it. I accidentaly drooled on the keyboard :-$ lol anyway so now I've talked to my parents (I'm still a student) and they decided to get me an iMac in like two years time which is a long time but I just got my Windows PC last year... :-( I had to go through 6 formats!!

The thing that confuses me is: if Mac are so good, how come the user base is just 5%?!!? I mean 'm going to try to switch my whole family, how come it's not the same in the rest of the world?! Confused..

Oh and I'm getting an iPod 30 gb too 5GB next july! yesssssssssssss

Keep it up Apple, great to hear you're 30!

Here's Why
Once upon a time, PeeCee's were cheaper than Macs. People
tend to naturally buy with an eye towards economy. So those
that wanter cheaper PeeCee's, begat people who bought their
PeeCee's because it's what everyone else had, and so on. It did
indeed leave Apple on the short end of the share stick.

Apple's current 5% market share, is about the same as BMW's
share in the automotive world. So, would you rather own a BMW
or a Corolla?

Now that Windoze XP can run on the new Intel Macs, I will be
watching that market share closely.

counting
Two years ago a friend of mine was selling a G3 iBook 600MHz for $200. I've used that machine for the past two years with no problems. Fifteen months ago, I purchased a 20GB iPod. The first one of those I had to send back to Apple, but they replaced it with a brand new one in five days and since then it has worked flawlessly. Because of my portable music library, both of my brothers have since purchased an iPod. I even set up an Airport Express station for my brother in his home so he could entertain guests and use his iTunes library. All of the configuration and setup of these items was straightforward and simple. I don't purchase songs from iTunes. I use another service to purchase music. But I like iTunes because it is also a very simplistic interface, yet does exactly what I want it to do. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but I do enjoy their products and the stability and reliability are undeniable.

That said, I also use a Linux box (Xandros) and a Windows (XP) machine at home. I use Linux for basic web surfing and email. I use the Windows machine for work (my job requires FrontPage), for working with MS proprietary documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc. Also, since 90% of the world uses Windows, I find it an annoyance to not have the same applications as people who send me items that I simply can't open on a non-Windows machine.

I actually prefer my iBook from an OS perspective, but I agree that if I had to purchase a brand new one, it would be hard to justify the cost.

If I was to give my non-technical friends any advice, I would recommend Apple hardware/software if they could afford it. Secondly I would recommend Linux. (The order is essential because I know I would be the resource they would lean on in case of "technical difficulties.") Since spyware, virii, etc. LOVE the Windows platform, I recommend anything but Windows to neophytes.

My girlfriend occasionally has problems with her Windows machine. Most of the problems with Windows is user error. But that's my point. Users don't have as much ability to infect Mac/Linux machines because it's less of a worry. That may also change, but for now it's a reason.

I enjoy my Mac and iPod. I'd buy them again, no question. But for the most part, Windows is a necessary evil because so many people use it to create proprietary files on applications native to the OS. Hopefully that becomes less of an issue as the landscape matures.

3 cents (adjusted for inflation).

When an SE30 made me swoon...
My introduction to Mac was in the basement of my church in 1986. One of the pastors had bought a compact Mac setup so we could score our music for the musicians. We used a Mac 512ke using Mark of the Unicorn's ProComposer and Performer (at the time). We had an Ensoniq hooked up through a midi interface to the Mac and I would play the parts on the keyboard, quantize the captured midi, export to Composer, make adjustments and print it out. I listen to people talk about GarageBand these days and I think to myself that it took them 20 years to catch up. I was so enthralled with the Mac that I vowed to become a Mac programmer which I did in 1992 working for CompuServe.

At that time I was so much a Mac head that I would carry my Mac SE to work everyday in a Targa carrying case and set it up at work. Everyday I would move my PC out of my way and set up the Mac front and center on my desk. I had used the MicroPhone software to build a workstation for my Customer Service work and I automated all my tasks. I went from Customer Service Technical Support to the QA team where I established the master test suite for their Mac software. I was later promoted to the Mac Team to work on CIM 3.0 and later on the CompuServe C service before I went to work for UUNet building Mac software for them.

When I was at UUNet I was given a Wallstreet PowerBook as my development machine. I would tell people at the time, "when the Borg arrive I want them to embed my PowerBook into my chest."

In 1997 I almost gave up entirely on the Mac. I was so disappointed with the way the Apple leadership at the time had run the company into the ground. When I heard Jobs was back in control I got my second wind. I went to the 2000 Developer's Conference and renewed by vows.

I now have an iBook which I do all my coding and web development on. I bounce between that and Linux.

I was on a project recently that migrated a client's Mac OS 9 application to OSX and I received an iPod Nano as a bonus for delivering early. My wife and I use it for our sound track as we travel back and forth between Ohio and New York.

Say what you want about the Mac cult, but keep this in mind - resistance is futile!

Once You Go Mac...
I made the switch in college after getting into graphic design,
and have loathed using Windows ever since. I gladly pay the so
called "Apple-Tax" for the aesthetic quality of my machines
(Currently a 17" PowerBook, a 12" iBook, and a 17" iMac (Intel))
and for the OS.

I'm not a Mac fanatic however, and realize the platform isn't for
everyone. It's a computer, not a religion.

No, no iPod. Oh please. And but one Apple computer - and I won't make the same mistake again. The hardware quality is dubious; the price gouges; the operating system, as seen from the recent spate of exploits, is ridiculously insecure - and of course the good old fanboys.

If the rest weren't enough, those fanboys drive one away. No business will ever take Apple seriously with brown shirts like that hanging around. Fanboys should ESAD.

I admire Apple's design and usability. However, they are overpriced for what you get. I find that Windows (and previously, DOS) machines do what I want them to do and do it for less money. I think the iPods are great, but again, I use a Creative Zen since it's cheaper and does what I want it to do. Since I'm already using Windows, I chose to cast my lot with Windows Media Player and all those implications. As far as Windows and security, I haven't had any problems in all the years I've been online (back to 1985 and my first PC clone).

I like Apple's style. I just don't think it's worth the premium they charge.

Not my cup of tea, but choices are a good thing!
I dont own a Mac, or an Ipod&perhaps never will. But that doesnt mean its a bad group of products. They have, and continue to set new standards that have great appeal. And people want to be part of a winner. My Pentium 4 system would not be so great if it didnt have to compete with a Mac, and my Creative Zen wouldnt have as many features if there was no Ipod to go up against.

Competition is a good thing, and even better when all the players strive for quality.

Mac: No; iPod: Yes
I do not use a Mac, nor do I wish I did. It simply won't do what I need it to. And even if I did have an extra $3,000 lying around somewhere, I'd still spend it on a PC since it's of greater value to me.

I have an iPod. It's a wonderful little device and iTunes quickly became my favorite music player. It's worth noting, though, that I rip all my own music and refuse to be a slave to Apple's DRM or their music "store".

The true problem
When comparing a XP PC and a Mac, you must consider the user. When speaking of a Mac, you are talking about a machine that was implemented with an OS and almost all the software you will need to run this computer. Almost every product that you will install is written by Apple and works extremely well.

However, when speaking about a XP PC, most users download apps from the internet, install apps that they dont need, and in general, garble up the install with applications that where not developed by Microsoft or a entrusted vendor leaving there machine full of spy ware, resource stealing applications, and hacked registries.

Macs are amazing pieces of hardware/ software, however, so is a clean XP Pc install. I am very careful in what applications I load on any of my computers (MAC,PC,Linux) and I never have a problem with any of them.

Mac offers the typical home user with an appliance that meets all there needs. However, I would have to say I prefer XP or Linux over Macs. My XP machine runs extremely well and my Debian Linux machine with open office meet all the needs I ever have. My (wifes) Mac falls short in several areas and for this reason, I could never make the switch.

Plus,
XP PC $2000.00 2.2centrino, 2G M, 60G 5600 rpm drive, Dual Monitors

Linux $525.00 3.2Ghz, 1G M, 160G 7200 SATA, single 19 CRT Monitor (The winner because it was cheap, and is very fast)

Mac $3996.00 2.3Ghz, 2G M, 250G 7200 SATA 20-inch

So sick of this stupid argument
Please give me a break from this Apple vs. Microsoft argument. I have used both at various times during my career in IT. I have supported both as well. I love my Ipod but have been a PC user since they first hit the market. In the PC world, you can build your own box from scratch. Adding whatever components you like and tweaking the system to your own specifications. When has anyone been able to do that with a MAC? Not to mention the fact that MACs are more expensive than the average PC. But, I do find MACs to be "sexier" than the average PC. Having been developed with desktop publishing, academia and graphics centric applications. And now, we have Apple moving to the X86 architecture! Oh my! I am a gamer as well. And have never, ever seen one MAC at a LAN party. Never. Why is this? Because game developers have not, historically developed games for the MAC platform. Why? Because PCs and Microsoft are far more prevalent in the "real" world. However when it comes to MP3 players, I have found that the Ipod is second to none. I had a Rio when they first hit the streets. It was ok, but not even close to what the Ipod is these days. I also like Itunes and the download model that Apple has and sticks to despite preassure from the music industry. So, I have come to like both. I even have considered buying a MAC laptop! I am agnostic now as far as which is the best. It doesn't matter anymore.

Same old cliche's from pee ceers (that don't USE Mac)
Let's count 'em shall we:
1)Adding whatever components you like and tweaking the system to your own specifications. When has anyone been able to do that with a MAC?
Tweak away. I get things done, and have fun on Macs.
2)Not to mention the fact that MACs are more expensive than the average PC (yada, yada)
(As a matter of fact, you just DID mention it)
Not much more expensive. A better experience.
3)But, I do find MACs to be "sexier"
(Oh gee, thanks. That's substantive - not!)
4)Having been developed with desktop publishing, academia and graphics centric applications.
(can you elaborate on "developed" with graphic centric applications?) BTW Macs are big in the Sciences
5)I am a gamer as well. And have never, ever seen one MAC at a LAN party.
(You win, no Macs at LAN parties.) We'll just have to tuff it out I guess. Don't care, get a life.
