I guess they did not keep people add-ons in mind when they were designing it. Looks like I will have to buy new ones for Ipod Video :(. Or you think they did this to push sales of accessories?

Yep, problem for my wife ...

she uses the voice recorder from Belkin to record classes and loves it. No problem with sticking with her older iPod but if anything ever goes wrong with it ...

I have a feeling (hope?) that Belkin and Griffin will release voice recorders for the dock ... I've seen stuff from Griffin but not a voice recorder yet.

As the new iPod models support WAV recording in full 44.1kHz sampling mode (instead of the 8kHz used in previous models), we will definitely see a range of microphone accessories for it. The sound quality of the recordings will also be considerably higher.

Yep, problem for my wife ...

Yes sometimes parts change because of new designs have you tried plugging an AGP video card into a PCI Express slot??? guess what they don't fit why because AGP is being phased out. This isn't a new concept people. How about not running out to buy a new iPod every 6 months Apple releases a new one??? I'm still using a 3G iPod and it works fine. As for the person in the article if you bought the headphones after you bought your iPod you should have read the requirements all manufactures clearly state which iPods the accessory is compatiable with. One final note the connector at the top of the iPod has been there since the 3G iPod and was recently changed with the Nano count the years...

One more reason not to buy crApple

Compatability Issues. I've used Macs for years now along with
my PC's. THEY are over-rated. I've havent bought an iPod but my
experiences with Apple on this issue have been undesirable. The
ADC Adapter is a oerfect example, Why use a uncompatible
connector when there is already a proven one. Not being able to
use my 23" Apple HD Monitor monitor with my PC was the first
thing, so I bought an adapter switch box for 300 bucks. Then I
bought a G5 which in turn rendered the box useless. Its
pathetic. Im glad the finally switched back to DVI but im not
happy about burning the 300. Im sure New iPod owners can
relate to that.

The I-pod may be a top seller but is far and away NOT the best product for the dollar. Please begin carrying some info about things like Creative Vision, Live365, etc.

We can't do that because it will hurt the third-part add-ons.

Hmmmm. Maybe there should be a program, where third-party
vendors can be included in the loop, get a heads-up from Apple
about new designs, etc. .... "OH NO Mr. BILL!!" that's that damn
ipod "tax" program.

Oh well. After all, serious manufacturers only want to make
money off of another companies product, and not participate in
any programs, and receive free support as a result. Aint that
right?!

Of course they are trying to make money off of the ipod, but they are also providing valuable accessories that Apple might not provide, and they are often less expensive than Apples own products. But more to the point, its not just 3rd party products that don't work with the video ipod. Some of Apple's own products don't work with the new Ipod. I personally have no issue with hardware revisions, and excluding an extra port if it is a cost saving measure makes no difference to me. But I would be mad, if for example, I bought the new smaller playstation 2 and found out that it required all new controllers, so I can see why this does effect people who payed money for Apple and non-apple accessories.

apple has different priorities, which is good

instead of being trapped into backwards compatibility like the pc world, apple has been able to move forward with better products, including the digital media player market. i assume that in this case it was a toss up between have video capabilities and have the new ipod as thin it is versus including a backward compatible headphone accessory port. i would imagine that the tft active matrix display and harddrive crowd out the hardware for the port, i also assume this is why the headphone jack is now off center. i think apple was confident enough that people would buy the new accessories and that any money lost due the change in headphone interface would be marginal compared to the attraction of having an ipod thats 30% smaller with 50% more capacity and video capability for the same price.

2 features that did not have to go...

I have a 5th Gen 60 GB Black that does not use FireWire nor
doubles as a boot drive. I was told by Apple that FireWire works
like it use too, but upon getting the order the following week, it
only charges, just like the Nano. Not sure what the reasoning
was, but I would have considered a 4th Gen Photo instead. The
video looks nice and I can still use it as a external drive, so I
ultimately decided to keep the iPod, gave the cable to a friend.
This was my first iPod, so accesories, besides not having cases,
does not affect me.

A site called http://www.peer2link.com will actually help the Apple. There are free ipod movies on this website, which will encourage more people to buy the video player because now they can get free content.

I'm not sure whether videos specially formatted for iPod makes this any better than any other 'underground' file sharing site ? it's still illegal.
