The writer refers to the Centrino as a processor. You have to give it to Intel marketing for their efforts.

rebates?
by October 21, 2005 11:12 AM PDT
game machine hardware is sometimes sold at a loss... and I expect the linux community to take advantage of that.. though I highly doubt its going to effect the profit margin.. controls in the supply chain for the closed architectures will offset... the x86 world will need to deliver.. I dont mind paying for some extra chips that are dedicated to translation either.. put em right into the bios... and the 64-bit systems could really use some tweaking...

Entry Level PCs A Waste Of Money!
by Des Alba October 21, 2005 10:12 PM PDT
Entry level PCs aren't good for much else than acting like a terminal for web surfing and email. A PC needs at least 512Meg of RAM, regardless of CPU, in order to run XP successfully. Anything less will cause excessive roll-in-roll-out of the swp files. PC marketers would do well to sell a PC with at least a DL DVD burner, since it is currently very popular and in demand. Other configurations are just outdated and obsolete.

But a significant portion of users just use their computers for exactly the features you mentioned, email and web browsing. An entry-level computer is perfectly fine for them.
