Why?
Combine multiple product?s perceive values together merely jack up cost (price). How many of you buy a portable TV with AM-FM Radio? It is under $100! Do I equally need all of them at the same time ? on the go?
Perhaps, APPLE could use the momentum of iPod brand to create a ?fever of gadget?, that might just it ?
Bet on it, Steve Jobs is smart enough to put out an accessory ? 5 inches screen with 3 feet long wire (better with Bluetooth wireless ? but not yet). Well, that ?was? one of my ?unborn? projects ? 1996 or 1997.
By the way, ?curtain LCD screen? (roll-up) is available in Japan. That is why ?flat? screen getting so cheap so fast.
As a product designer (inventor?) and software (IT?) developer, I gave up ?all in one? perception long ago. Can you point out one lasting success for any ?all in one? products -especially ?on the go?.
Extension of ?all in one?, many corporations are trying to do ?all in one? business, for instance,
Microsoft ? Give products to customers for them to do ?all in one? themselves ? customer has the control.
Google ? Do ?all in one? for customers ? customer is lazy.
As a Board Advisor, I ask, which business model would you pick for next 10 years and which customer would you want? Which stock is a better one? Long or Short?
How about another ?One more thing?? APPLE packs with XM - on the ?next day? of next earning report day. What a overshadowing! Take care of your AAPL stock!
clever by giving the appearance that this is really all just One
Thing, not Lots of Things in One Device. I agree that portable
video never worked.... But the irony here is that Jobs was lying
through his teetch all these months when proclaiming the
unlikeliness of a video iPod. He made many of the same
arguments you do as to why it's such a bad idea.... But he was
planning it all along! WHY??
The key is that this has LITTLE to do with iPod Video!!! In fact,
most people WON"T BUY the iPod Video, but stick with the
Nano!!! SO WHY???
Because this is about content distribution to your PC!! Screw the
iPod, they want you to watch this at HOME! They're betting
heavily on it!
You make good points, but again, this isn't just about the iPod,
but the entire ball of wax. I think the video pod is just a
gimmick to get people used to downloading TV to their
computers and using the mac as their final entertainment hub.
As a board advisor, please tell me which boards you advise for
so i can avoid buying stock in them. =b

And, after-sell services do not apply on added value.
Steve Jobs is a marketer - actually that is a essential qaulity for CEO. However, marketer usually not as solid as engineer like Bill Gates. That is why Gates is not the CEO! Agree?

But, beyond the marketing and the visual appeal... the factor
that has made people so enamored with Apple products over the
years is trust. People trust devices when interacting with them
gives consistent, predictable results. As was initially intended,
Apple produces devices that are as predictable as kitchen
appliances.
You get predictability with products that operate logically,
intuitively, and reliably. People usually equate this with
"stupidly." But they miss the point when they do so. A product
like Final Cut Pro is hardly unsophisticated, but it is logical,
intuitive, and reliable.
Predictability also comes from consistency.
No one else offers the continuity, reliability, and consistency
across a family of related products that Apple does.
Videos are treated (interface-wise) almost exactly as songs are
on the iPod and in iTunes. People will trust and eventually enjoy
the experience of buying and playing movies on/in Apple's
products just as they do music now, provided the experience is
what they expect.
We know exactly what to expect with videos from Apple. That is
why they will sell, and why other products (while better in certain
respects) will go the way of the competitors in the music space.

- Sure, now the iPod and iTunes own their respective categories.
