battery life?
by Roman12 October 12, 2005 1:03 PM PDT
I wonder what the battery life on the new Ipod is like. The video capability and the larger screen would consume a lot of power, and what interests me is how long the Ipod would work between charges. Because, even the current Ipod isn't known for it's battery life.

shut up. It's a computer. It's meant to be improved upon and left in the dust. Either keep up with technology or don't. Don't complain about it.

Divx/Xvid Support
by Favic October 12, 2005 1:16 PM PDT
The first thing I thought of when I read this is, will it be able to play non-drm'd mpg4 files. Like many others, my computer has a pvr and i encode my favorite shows into xvid. I downloaded itunes6 and tried to import my favorite xvids and it did not add it to my video library. My mpgs did however load and play properly.....

If they dont support peoples favorite format (like they did mp3 with the original ipod) how can this take off?

Three words: Creative Zen Vision
by aemarques October 13, 2005 4:38 AM PDT
Creative Labs already has it: it's called the Zen Vision, it has a 3.7'' screen, supports MPEG-4/DivX/Xvid AND supports video at 640x480 resolution.
But you can settle for LESS and buy the iPod. It's really up to you. ;-)

Screen?
by pballfreak34 October 12, 2005 1:16 PM PDT

so who cares
Who really wants to watch video on either?
by ethernet76 October 13, 2005 11:36 AM PDT
It'd be great for small clips and what not, but 3.7 or 2.5 would
make me go insane.

I'm thinking more about the TV out on the dock. No more burning
DVDs.

Microsoft's approach is superior, but still falls short...
by ppdeagle October 12, 2005 1:47 PM PDT
This may not be the case for long, but because Microsoft is further along at bringing Internet movies and video to the living room, Microsoft will be the first of the two companies to be able to capitalize on the prime real estate: the "viewer's couch".

But both companies are trailing the startups.

Not a good comparison.
by hemen thacker October 12, 2005 1:51 PM PDT
We are talking of mobile videos and not veiwing at home. Due to TV shows availability and you can play the DVDs by ripping it will be a great success when you are travelling. Specially kids will get the individual movie play no sharing required. You can rip your DVDs in mov and mp4 formats through a software and drag and drop it on the library of itunes and upload it on iPod.

Another Trojan Horse...

Apple got a late start getting into the MP3 game, but then
delivered the iPod plus iTunes and smoked every other
competitor. Then they brought it to Windows and things got
even hotter. The ACC (mpeg4) format is quickly becoming the de
facto standard for digital music as a result.

Every iTunes user has QuickTime installed and now Apple has
introduced an iPod that plays video and upgraded their online
store for downloading new content - music videos, short films
and TV shows. I wonder how Microsoft's, Real's and Apple's
video platforms will compare in a year.

Microsoft, Real, TiVo, Sony and others better hope Apple doesn't
add a tuner and recorder to that new iMac.
Microsoft has failed

MS has lost this game. Remember WebTV?

Does the new iPod use FAT file system?
by kribor October 12, 2005 1:56 PM PDT
Using FAT causes all kinds of problems with for iPod reliability -- one reason why I won't spend the $$ on one. The damned things crash way to much. I have a friend who after having to replace all his files for the third time (not to mention the three iPods themselves), he opted for a PocketPC PDA and loaded it with enough SD memory to be VERY useful.

I'd like to do the same thing with that Linux PDA that Sharp sells in Japan...

iPod was way too delicate for your friend. It works fine for many of my friends. I have a nano and it works great.

What about Archos?
by October 12, 2005 2:23 PM PDT
You didnīt even mention the Archos AV products. all of them let you record and play video and sound, and some even have a camera to record video, directly in to de AV, and also work as a photo viewer. so whatīs this hype about a new ipod video? when we already have great video portables. check the archos products, and then say again that the screens of the actual portable Digital Video players are not good yet.

The Difference...
by October 12, 2005 2:43 PM PDT
is that this is Apple with their brand iPod. The iPod family has reached critical mass and now somewhat self-propels itself. Also with Jobs reaching TV licensing agreements with at least ABC and allow you to download easily from iTunes, the masses that haven't played around with digital video before, will now.

but when can I RECORD video from my DV camera?
by Hobyx October 12, 2005 2:28 PM PDT
So.. what I'm waiting for is someone to enable iPods to not only
SHOW video but be able to RECORD video directly from my DV
camera. That would really be useful, fun, time-saving and
wonderful.

Unimpressed
by TV James October 12, 2005 2:53 PM PDT
Yeah, I'm unimpressed. I was really hoping that the AV out would also function as an analog in so that I could dump stuff from my PVR directly onto my iPod, and then take that to work have it come back into iTunes where I could watch it on a decent sized screen.

I know there are others that already do this, but none have the iTunes functionality that seems so neat. So if others have it, I don't know why the iPod doesn't offer it. Ok, I do, but I find it to be a disappointing shortcoming.

by pmardones October 12, 2005 3:34 PM PDT
Why? Actually, they're not even dubbing this new player "Video
iPod" or "iPod Video". This is just THE iPod you can get from now
on. It's priced the same as the old one (the "Music iPod") and it just
"happens" to play video as an "extra".

Anything that says IPOD anything Apple can just take you to court and get it. So why bother?
Doesn't matter either way

iPod is a registered trademark.

To get the name apple just needs to file a complaint with ICANN.
