This service is not available to DirecTV subscribers and there are no plans for it.

DirecTV has no interest in provided it's subscribers with TiVo software upgrades.

We have been waiting years for the Home Media Option

So true. I don't understand at all why directtv are being such boneheads about this. If they want people to buy their tivo units, they should full embrace the tivo software. Perhaps tivo has some nasty licensing scheme that makes upgrades too expensive or something? Anyone have the scoop? Now that would make an interesting article.

Your're right, TivoToGo is not available for DirecTV subscribers. We've corrected the article. Thanks for pointing this out.
Umm...ReplayTV has been able to do this for years

I've had a ReplayTV unit for over 2 years now and out of the box I've been able to transfer video across my home network with a little program called DVArchive - http://www.dvarchive.org

No encryption or anything it's perfect.

And Media Center can record a show and transmit it across a network to be viewed on PCs too. But the install base for TiVo is tremendously huge in comparison to any of its competitors. More people will benefit from this upgrade to TiVo.
