Where's the innovation?
by Sac Tinko December 2, 2004 7:32 AM PST
That's great that Dell can sell commodity parts cheap. But what about innovation? How are they pushing the envelope in the industry? The fact is they are just taking the innovative ideas from Apple, Sony and others and mass producing them with cheaper parts. Meanwhile the innovators are changing the world and building new markets.

Missing the Point
by December 2, 2004 1:11 PM PST
You're missing the point. Innovation is both about creating new products AND about how to effectively bring those products to the marketplace. The latter may not be sexy, but the two types of innovation need each other -- you can't market what doesn't exist and you can't invent without a market. It's that simple.
Dell and Consumers BAD MIX
by mikey999 December 2, 2004 10:52 AM PST
Our firm uses almost exclusively Dell products at this point. However, we also use Dell's Gold Support that we pay extra for.

As a consumer I would never buy a product from Dell the support that a consumer gets it absolutely horrible! I have had to deal with Dell as a consumer in the past and many of my friends have also, all experiences have been sub-par to say the least.

I think the first company that comes out with excellence in customer support for the consumer will see a boost in business. People who have dealt with horrid tech support from Dell, and HP would be willing to pay extra for the product. So sell them cheap and leave the customer that is not tech saavy to fend for themselves! It was a good business model for profit, however, I think it will fade.

Have you not heard of IBM?
by December 2, 2004 1:37 PM PST
I can tell you from experience that IBMs quality of Service is amazing. And if you look at the pricing structure you can sort of see that.

For me what it comes down to is this. If you absolutely need the lowest price, Dell will certainly do excellent for you, but if you need the support in case something breaks down, IBMs higher cost pays for itself.
