With the new Blue-Ray Disk this means that you wont have to switch disk between accessing certain features on a gaming disk.

This is a very good move for the Sony PS3 and its about time that we will be getting it if its included in the PS3. The announcement will come in March 2005.

Logical Choice

Going with BluRay was a logical choice for Sony, but this seems to be a public statement to rally more support behind that particular technology. It'll be interesting to see how the blue-ray vs. HDDVD debate pans out.. Do we really need 2 new formats?

This is a no-brainer. The only other option was to go with the former DVD format. With the power of the PS3, the DVD just would not have the read speed and capacity needed to keep up.

Now to find out what Microsoft is going to use for the XBox2. If Sony is smart they'll court them to use BD-ROM too. Microsoft has less to benefit from being different, and I think they'll stick with DVD or BD-ROM to make their next-gen easier to write games for.

Microsoft needs acceptance in the market still. Xbox might look better, run faster and play nicer than the PS2, but it's not got the market share and dominance yet. Xbox 2 will have an early start, but if they do not keep the technology lead on Sony they won't gain the market share they want.
