Google Checkout checks in

Most of you are missing the point. Your compairing apples to oranges. When paypal started rolling they were blind and didn't even know if their service would take off. When it did, they changed a few things, but not much. They had no need to changed they were making good money. Now Google is in the picture. Google plans to put in place what paypal cutomers have been asking for... for a long time and never delivered. Paypal had no reason to change. They knew they were on top. Customers would remain loyal because they had no other company to rely on. Or at least they had no other company branded as paypal is. Now Paypal has a rival. It will be interesting to see if Paypal cleans up shop, and starts to listen to their customers more often. Then starts offering the things their customers want. Google has a good start because they are branded. So I believe many will give Google at least a thought and a try. Hopefully Google wont let it go to their heads, and remember they have customers depending on them to keep their very personal data secure.

Google to rule the world wide web!
by pentium4forever June 30, 2006 9:28 PM PDT
I believe Google wants to rule the Internet or known also as The World Wide Web!

They are the rulers of the search engine section already.

The following below have/are been their goals:

Search -rules this right now

Email - not ruling right now but been very successful and may take over Yahoo and MSN/Hotmail, better in my opinion with tons of storage and increasing even, free POP access

Spreadsheets - pretty good and giving Microsoft Excel a challenge

Blogging - Blogger has been very successful and continues to grow

Instant Messenging - become pretty popular

Google Earth - awesome new tool

Google Maps - giving serious competition to Mapquest

Checkout - may give Paypal a challenge

Google Video - not as successful yet

Eventually Google will rule the Internet. Are they working on a web browser? I wouldn't be surprised if they worked with Mozilla and added tons of built in Google functionality into the browser.

From an Online Merchant Standpoint
by bellclocks.com July 1, 2006 10:27 AM PDT
I've read several comments on the google checkout service, and wanted to post a brief comment from the perspective of an online merchant.

We understand the security and privacy concerns that are expressed in many of the posts. While we are equally concerned, from the standpoint of use, there will be customers who will sign up for, and use google checkout. While time will only tell if it will "sink or swim", businesses must cater to the needs of their customers in the services and products they offer. This is why many merchants, including bellclocks.com, will or have already signed on.

For our part, we will not implement the service until we receive answers to some questions regarding customer privacy - but as with every question asked of google, yahoo, msn, etc. - I'm sure they'll simply say "Don't worry - be happy".

One final note: For those of you who think they are collecting alot of information from buyers...believe me when I say they want plenty of financial information from merchants...things such as gross monthly sales, average ticket amount, etc. What will they do with all this information? -
What google has done from the start - turn around and sell it back to the same customers they collected it from...at a profit!

What a business model huh?

There is no Amazon vs Google

Google is not selling anything to consumers and Amazon is not really into the payment business.

WILL THEY TELL THE CHINESE?
by au561 July 1, 2006 10:52 PM PDT
GOOGLE HAS ESTABLISHED A TRACK RECORD OF KOWTOWING TO THE CHINESE GOVT. SO THEY CAN CONTINUE DOING BUSINESS THERE. THEY SAY "DO NO EVIL" AND THEN DO IT. WHY DOES ANYBODY THINK THAT ANY DATA WILL BE SAFE IN GOOGLES HANDS?
BOYCOTT ALL GOOGLE PRODUCTS UNTIL THEY CHANGE THEIR PRIVACY POLICY!

How long before they enter your business, and thus "Kill it"?
by Sandra_Kerns July 2, 2006 9:01 AM PDT
Google enters yet another business! How long before they enter your business and thus "Kill it"? Look, between Google & Yahoo they have entered into 100's of businesses over last
few years, from this payment processing, to email, to on-line dating, to car sales, to web site hosting, to job posting, to real estate, etc. etc.
How long before Google or Yahoo enters your business? And once they have entered your business do you think you will have a chance in Hell of competing with them? Of course not. Because they are armed with Billions of dollars and they can always push our listings Down in the search results (whether general or paid listings) while pushing their own Up & Up. So what to do against Google & Yahoo entering business after business and thus putting our businesses at jeopardy.
What is needed is a pure search engine. A search engine that will ONLY be in the search engine business and NO other business. Is this just a dream?
No, good news is that such a search engine does exist. It is a Not-for-Profit search
engine called Anoox. You can find them here: www.anoox.com
So for the sake of your business, my business, get the word out about AnooX. Because the more successful they are, the more successful we are, the more free we are from search engine competition, from threat of Google & Yahoo entering our business and thus surely killing
them.

Google hasn't destroyed any competitors
by lingsun July 4, 2006 6:13 AM PDT
Google hasn't destroyed any competitors. Even the search-engine industry has multiple players. What they have done is prostitute themselves to the Chinese government and help oppress 1.2 billion people. They also link to child porn pages and encourage people to molest children for profit.
Sigh... Another Make-Believe Business Guru.
by kamwmail-cnet1 July 4, 2006 8:39 AM PDT
For your information, the only business Google entered into and dominated is the search business. All others were a flop, garnishing at best a 10% market share. But hey, don't take my word for it, do your own research instead of posting politically correct mumbo jumbo that you'd heard somewhere.

Here's a hint, try Businessweek.com and Economy.com.
finally web 2.0 arrives ! ---> google checkout
by www.datagrep.com July 2, 2006 12:44 PM PDT
google checkout formally opens the world wide web ver 2.0. We have been long time waiting for integrated micro-payment facility managed by a third party service provider, with end-to-end functionality including google checkout API for customization.

So you should stop using anything financial related on the internet.
So, why is that a problem?
by W3ZJ December 11, 2006 8:57 AM PST
Do you think any merchant whether on-line or bricks and morter allows you to make credit purchases without checking your credit? They would leave themselves wide open to fraud and lose their shirts if they didn't check. I've been enjoying the $10 to $20 discounts that many very reputable vendors have been offering this Christmas season on top of thier normally low prices just for using Google checkout. Am I going to refuse those discounts because they might check my credit? I don't think so and bye the way it is very convenient and easy to use

If you are not shopping on-line you are wasting a lot of time rummaging around in stores trying to find something that's out of stock and if you do happen to find it you're not getting the best price. I'll do most of my shopping from my easy chair, compare prices from dozens of merchants without going anywhere or burning a gallon of gas, have it delivered to my doorstep in days for free, and take every discount I can get. Each to his own I guess!
Google Checkout integration
by http://www.mercantec.com August 2, 2006 3:02 PM PDT
Google Checkout integration makes sense for every AdWords advertiser that is selling online. We've been working with many merchants on this and they're seeing real results -- more sales!
